Does this sound right ?

Hello, I posted earlier in the month about the ECU light coming on, on my Octavia 2.0 FSI. To cut a long story short it is a P0012 code Camshaft timing advance (bank 1) target value not attained. The cam sensor was replaced by an independant garage, (fault code returned) so I took it to a main dealer who checked the timing before diagnosing the fault as a faulty solenoid valve. All for the cost of nearly £500. Having taken the car away the light came back on so I return the car to the same dealers. having had the car for two days I got a phone call today saying they were still not sure what was causing the fault code but on the advice of Skoda technical they wanted to carry out the following checks: sump removal/cam cover removal/oil pressure test - 3 hours labour Check for cam damage/check oil strainer/ check chain tension/ check timing chain tensioner 6.5 hours labour. A further total cost of £912 before any repairs and these one may not even identify the fault!!!

This seems like alot of money to experiment with my car as they clearly don't know what the issue is. Before I start shelling out more money does anyone have any experience of this sort of thing and does it seem like the right course of action for a garage to take ?

Any advice welcome

Ask them for the £500 back for the solenoid valve they needlessley replaced.

Tell them you aren't their guinea pig. If they want to 'experiment' to diagnose the fault then that is fine, but it should be at their expense.

Once they've correctly diagnosed the fault ask them for a price to fix it.

Open a case with Skoda customer services, 08457 745745.

If a Skoda trained technician at a Skoda main dealer using Skoda diagnostic equipment can't diagnose the fault without randomly replacing components at the customers expense then what the hell are we paying £90+ an hour for.

Grrr, makes my blood boil.

^ what he said.

^ What those two said.
