Sticking back drums

Featured Replies

First of all, I wish all fellow Fabia owners a very Merry Christmas!

Recently in all this wet weather we have been enduring, i have found that leaving the car parked overnight or for a couple of days that the rear brakes have been sticking on after releasing the handbrake!

Pulling away releases the drums with a jolt and a creak! Afterwards the brakes work fine. I am not applying the handbrake anymore than usual.

What causes this?? Is it all the moisture in the atmosphere?

I am wondering if the car is due some new brake linings as it has now done nearly 27'000 miles. I am not particularly heavy on the brakes as I know this affects fuel consumption!!!

The rear brakes can certainly freeze on in cold wet weather. If that's what is happening it's nothing to worry about.

Thats what I thought!

Shoes wont need replacing you'll need to strip them down and clean them. All the dust makes them stick.

Link below is for Mk1 Fabia - probably the same as yours

Most likely you have bleeding brake cylinder(s). That was the cause at my previous cars (Octavia, Fabia, Pug 106).

NO. When wet, the back brakes do stick on. Not a fault, its just how they are. Same on most cars.

I once left mine at a Manchester Airport car park for 3 weeks (in the winter time), while on a trip to Europe. Came back to find car WOULD NOT BUDGE!!! It was as if the shoes had been welded to the drums. Took at least 5 minutes (not exaggerating) of forward and backward moves to free it up, clutch must have hated me at the time...

Never used the handbrake since, except on very steep inclines and the odd roundabout (nah, just kidding). I always leave it in 1st and it has never gone anywhere. Other than getting you sideways, the handbrake is too overrated... :notme:

Seriously though, since I stopped using it, I've never ever had sticking drums, and obviously the cables don't get strained.
