Cold starting problem - TFSI Vrs

Featured Replies

Searched the threads for anything on the above but can only find relating to diesels.

I have changed my battery as i were having cold start issues, still no better.

Its fine once warmed up, however that first start of the day is concerning me.

Its really rough & turns over after about 4-5 seconds, all is ok after that until the next morning again.

Am i looking at a starter motor on the way out or an alternator issue or something else?

I have recently changed all plugs & coils within the last 3 months.

Any ideas or comments?

Cheers.

Just read down the threads and found another topic regarding the tfsi so will keep my eye on that 1.

Cheers anyways.

Happens to them all i *think* its carbon build up and the engine needs a decoke.

O ok, how's that done then pal?

I believe that an 'italian tune up' should do the trick.

What fuel system cleaner would be recommended for this?

Is this something I could do myself by basically giving it a good thrashing through the gears then!?

You can fully decoke it by using a fuel cleaner you would need to manually strip the engine down, but try BGK244

Hi what is this bgk244 and where can i get it as i fancy giving my tfsi abit of clean as ahes abit lazy when cold

That stuff will only remove coke from the cylinder head if there is any, most problems are related to the inlet valves. Fuel doesn't wash over the inlet valves so there is no way to clean them with additive.

Lazy starting may just be the high pressure fuel pump leaking back when left for a while. The pump then takes a few cranks to build pressure as it's cam shaft driven, if the pump is worn it may take a extra cranks to start.

yes mate.

Cool, may try it then, cheers pal.

There seem to have been an influx of cold starting issues on the TFSI recently, is this a common issues on older engines?

What's your emmisions like? I saw wneeler dealers when they did up that xk8 and the emmisions were crap-think it was the hydrocarbon levels. Anyway the tall one got a system that cleaned the whole system end to endand it used special fuel that got rid of all the carbon-took about an hour to do so might be worth looking out for that episode on sky and checking it out. Bought the levs right down so if that's your problem could be the answer?

  • 1 month later...

had the same problem on my octavia. i replaced the coolant temperature sensor. sorted. the sensor allows more fuel and air for cold starting, like an automatic choke

  • 1 year later...

Just had this happen to me today: car was left in the garage for a few days, tried to start it spluttered. Second and third attempts also unsuccessful, battery was turning the engine but no start (almost like it was lacking fuel). Went to look under the bonnet and the lights started flickering. Went back inside the cabin, the dash lights were flickering as well. Took out the key, put it back in, tried once more and after a few turnovers it started.

Ideas?
