fun fan switch and thermostat housing

Featured Replies

hi guys wen i bridge my fan it works so changed my fan switch and the fan still not kicking in

at the same time im trying to replace thermostat housing wud these b linked ?

Hi dil 1986, I've just replaced the thermostat unit on mine with the 87 degree option. What's the problem with the casing necessitating replacement? How does it typically run temperature wise and does it rise sufficiently to activate the fan? There could be a thermostat link or possibly temp sensor?

Would be useful to know a little more ;)

So with no thermostat in there was no fan activation. It doesn't sound like you need a new housing, just the actual thermostat unit that locates within. I'd go for this first & it's quite straightforward as only involves the removal of 1 hose, two retaining bolts & then replacing the unit that sits within the housing. Go for the 87 degree unit, priced around £15 to £20 & once you've reassembled just refill the system as required with the correct anti freeze mix/grade. Mine normally rises to around 2/3 - 3/4 on the gauge before the fan trips in.

Sounds like the housing just isn't sealing properly & you can try liquid gasket sealant to resolve. I've had to replace a few caps on the expansion tank, spread over different cars, so not uncommon. As with most problems it's just a case of chipping away until you find what works ;)

It's quite tricky to replace the thermostat housing on the 1.6 engine, you have to get that damned c clip into that pipe that goes down the back of the engine.

what c clip ? :|

there's a green c shaped plastic retaining clip that slots into the thermostat housing, there is a groove in the end of the plastic coolant pipe too which it mates with. On some of them the clip is black.. It's a right royal pain in the hoop to get this clip inserted correctly.

also noticed the sensor in the housing has a yellow band instead of a blue 1 but the plug fits would this make a difference ?

The sensor I recently purchased has a yellow band but didn't need to fit as thermostat resolved the problem. I cross checked the part before purchase & it came back as suitable for the 1.6mpi.
