To Smartphone or not to Smartphone, that, is the question.

Why?

The HTC is a fantastic all round smart phone. Google maps, the car function, nice large buttons while in the car.

I have the HTC 1 x, this is a great phone very quick and slick. It has just updated to jelly bean and this has made what was a very good phone great. I agree that once you have a smart phone you will want to use the apps that are around, though as said you may only download a small number but you will then think how did you manage without them. I work in IT support and found an app that looks at WiFi signals this has given me a tool that saves me loads of time diagnosing WiFi problems.

I'd disagree. I have about 4 non-standard apps installed IIRC: Citrix Receiver, a SSH client, Angry Birds, and bus scout, because I treat my phone like my PC- install the bare minimum I want/need. Makes for a stable phone.

My point being is that you have downloaded apps onto a smartphone, & by your comments i would say that you said you wouldnt ;)

Nah, you suggested anyone will use all the capacity with apps. I fitted a 32GB micro-sd- but don't need it (I don't use my phone for music). Like I said, i have a few apps, just not very many, and I'm very selective. All the people I know who have problems are the ones that download apps left, right, and centre.

As I have said I am going from a Nokia 6300 to a Lumia 610.The 6300 works off a sim card the 610 off a micro sim.If I order online will O2 send a micro sim with the new phone and if I buy from a shop will they order up a new micro sim?.Im a bit baffled.

You might need to ask, or buy a sim cutter from ebay. They're cheap. Failing that, a dodgy mobile phone shop or stall on a market will have a cutter.

Careful, older Sims don't cut, my 2 year old o2 SIM wouldn't lucky the Mrs was given a micro SIM when she got my s3

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

Hmm, most sims from the last 5 years or more should be cuttable unless they have inbuilt peripherals such as encryption and expanded memory, commercially available sims never have on board peripherals.

Carphone warehouse cut sims for £1 (they have a tool, essentially a hole puncher). If you do get a sim cut properly, keep the outside wrapping. I bought a nokia 710 with microsim and arranged to have my number etc transferred to the new sim. 1 week, 3 phone calls and a visit to an orange store that still hadn't happened and I was getting impatient so I went to carphone warehouse, got my old full sim cut, stuck it in the nokia and havent had problems since. I then wedged the micro sim that I got with the nokia, wedged it in the excess clippings from my full sizers cut up job and it now resides in my old ZTE Blade/Orange San Francisco. So basically you can use the cutting as an adaptor to put a micro sim in a full size slot.

I wouldn't recommend cutting a sim by hand, too difficult to line it up straight.

Failing that, the micro sim I was offered with my nokia I got for free just by asking when I bought the phone.

It was car phone warehouse that wouldn't cut my SIM, it took less than an hour for o2 to activate the new SIM, was a pain free process just did it online with one of their gurus lol

yeah, I didnt have a problem with sim activation on my previous handset. Bought phone in carphone warehouse, spoke about transferring sims. Made 1 phone call. Done a few hours later. Well I've had my nokia since august and the sim still hasnt transferred after those 3 phone calls and visiting an orange store (bought the phone in carphone warehouse again and as before asked about sim transfer when I bought it aswell). At least the old sim worked fine when cut.

Thanks Fubar but the main reason for looking at the smart phone is the bigger screen size, it will make my life a lot easier.

The main reason for asking everyone for their input was to get a clearer picture of the pro's and con's from people who know, through experience of a particular phone.

I only suggested G600 as I said I have both the W810i and G600 I upgraded from W810i to the G600 and it's screen is bigger and is higher resolution. G600 can do a lot more than the W810i and was suggested as a budget choice as some rather carry a £40 phone in their pocket not a £400 phone. That and some people do not like fully touch screen handsets for typing purposes and prefer to have keys. I also have 2 smartphones I mentioned the Samsung Galaxy S2 aswell and gave my recommendation on it again from my experience of another particular handset.

For example Jonny5ive suggested one I had not even considered. Reading reviews from suppliers web sites is not quite the same as getting first hand info from people that you know and trust.

I know he did as did I, in suggesting a budget alternative.

No idea where the Samsung reference came from, its made by ZTE not Samsung. Quite right. Me neither - always thought it was similar to an S2 but clearly not.

lol my 2 daily phones are indeed an S2 and a San Francisco (ZTE Blade) the S2 replaced the Blade as my personal mobile and I binned an old Nokia handset for work phone and used my old handset. Light years apart but I do still appreciate the San Francisco as its small compact and lasts a week on stand by after heavy usage for a good 2 years.

My decision to go for the San Fran was it was free with a contract, the rest were silly money.

My San Fran cost £69 on Orange pay as you talk when it was launched about 2 years or so ago as it was an unknown brand immediately binned Orange sim and rooted /debranded it and unlocked in process for free.

Google Nexus 4, got mine a few weeks back absolutely outstanding

Nexus 4, damn nice phone but probably overkill for his needs.

As well as the phone and operating system you may want to consider how it will back up and synchronise with other things you use. Which email service do you use, which diary system do you use? Most smart phones have methods of keeping things such as email, diary and contact lists synchronised between phone, desktop, laptop and Cloud.
