Has anyone had their 1.6 TDi mapped yet?

Featured Replies

I am looking at getting my Monte 1.6 TDi CR 105 mapped around March/April time and have been making some enquiries as to how much it will cost, and what gains I will get

I'm only interested in having the car mapped by a reputable company, so can anyone let me know if the ones i've posted below are or are not - also if I have missed out any companies that can offer remaps on this engine and are recommended please let me know.

So far I have got quotes from:-

Vagtech (Revo map) - £480 (141 bhp 217lb/ft)

AMD Essex - £300 (128 bhp 215lb/ft)

Unit 18 - £375 (figures not quoted but assured similar to Revo map - driven an Ibiza with same engine, feels a nice map)

finally (and a bit cynical about them due to what I believe to be exaggerated power claims......)

Celtic Tuning - £360 (153 bhp / 238lb/ft)

From experience who would probably be the safest bet to go with?

you should speak to ben at shark tuning if you want the best.

I didn't see the 1.6 listed on their website, I shall get in contact with them, see what they say

Think most of the big manufactures have now cracked the Siemens ECU so just down to the tuner having developed a tune.

Think all require the ecu being taken out and flashed out of the car. After which maps can be changed via obd.

150bhp seems a bit much, I'd go somewhere safe and reliable like 140 tops.

Torque needs to be even gain as well.

Shark and unit 18 sound good to me.

Do all 1.6 TDI 105 engines use Siemiens ECUs including an 11 plate golf ?

The reason I am asking is my dad bought a tuning box for the golf, but hes stopped using it now, do you reckon it would work on my Monte ?

I went onto the sellers website but now if I search for my car or my dads it says the only thing now available is a pedal box, not sure why they have stopped doing the tuning boxes for the 1.6 TDI engine.

Cheers

JJ

I'm leaning towards Unit 18 at the moment as it's the most local (about 5 miles from home) and heard good things about them.

I also would of thought that the ECU would indeed be the same as the e-mail I got back from Celtic tuning said the gains would be the same as the engines used in other VW 1.6 TDI engines.

- youtube link from Celtic Tuning about their remap - using a VW Golf, same ECU.

Interesting post this.... i am waiting until the end of this year until my warranty is up on my 1.6TDI (75BHP) before i get it mapped, you experiences will be interesting.

All I'd say is avoid Revo at all costs.

They blew my car up and then washed their hands of it. I'm currently gathering all I need to start a legal battle.

Been running a tuning box + K&N panel filter for a while on mine, pretty happy with it, was meant to be 30bhp increase and you defo notice it with overtaking etc...

I only went for that as it literally takes a few mins to fit so easily removed if need be. Didn't notice a huge difference in MPG gains, but mid range grunt is all good.

Mines the 105bhp 1.6 TDI

Plus it was cheap, got it for racechip.de great price and service!

Oh and no noticeable extra smoking either, even under hard acceleration.

I shall have to take a look at that route as well, as could be better if any warranty issues arise, would a remap at service intervals with a free service plan be a problem as I guess the dealership would know straight away it's been mapped

Yeah a dealership would know, especially when they plug it in, some are OK with it others not, I used to work at my local dealership so they have no problems with it!

I personally wouldn't use a tuning box on a DPF fitted car.

Although it seems like no extra smoke is produced I bet more is but is caught by the DPF. All that extra soot could cause problems.

All the tuning boxes basically do is dump more fuel into the engine which can cause excess smoke before the turbo comes in.

Just my opinion.

Thats sound sensible, i think for me it will not be a box, i will want a proper remap of my ECU, which given the time i have i should know more in a years time.

How is that any different to a map? The way that you get more power is by more fuel and air.

No problems with mine and I've been running it for about 10k.

Super Chips list the 1.6 on their website, giving an increase of around 41BHP and 70NM. Plus, they are local to you in Buckingham.

Not all tunig boxes just dump extra fuel in. I.e dtuk

Maybe... Tmc do one for your car

A map makes is changes inside the ECU. With a tuning box it fools the ECU by telling it is injecting the same amount of fuel but by actually injecting more. It doesn't increase boost or change any other settings.

Phil

It increases boost indirectly. The more air passing through the exhaust turbine cause increased boost. The ecu does try an control this but the n75 map hasn't been altered to help control it.

Essentially.

A remap modifies all the safety limits in an ECU. A tuning box bypasses them.

Smoke used to be an indicator, but with DPF cars it's not any longer. It's only when your DPF keeps filling up that you'll realise something is wrong.
