Columbus Firmware Update

Featured Replies

Hi

Looked around and have struggled to find a concise answer to this

What and how is the best way to upgrade the firmware on the Columbus unit.

Also is there a reliable method and is there someone in the Letchworth area that would do this for me, if so how much etc.

Would rather have someone experienced to do this on my expensive toy.

Thanks in advance and feel free to PM me

I have just been through this - there are numerous threads here and on other websites too and I agree it is a tad confusing to say the least!

Your starting point is to find out exactly what model type of Columbus RNS510 you have and what firmware you have installed currently. Armed with this information you can then narrow down what firmware upgrade you can do/need. One thing for sure is that you cannot just plonk in the latest firmware into any old version of RNS510 - you might be ok but you run the risk of bricking the unit!

In newer models (I think from around mid 2011 manufactured cars) you should be able to access what is known as the "Secret Menu". Turn on the unit and then hold down the "Set up" button for at least 30 secs. Initially it will show FM and AM but it will then scroll on through to another screen and show much more info (including model and firmware). If it doesn't do this then you have to do it another way (which is what happened to me). The easiest is to find a member near you who has a diagnostic kit on a laptop called VCDS which can be plugged into your car. Using that, they can tell you what you have but also make a quick change - in Channel 37 if I recall - which means that you too can always access the Secret Menu.

Here is the VCDS owners map

I believe there are programs around that will do this for you - but they need to be installed onto a disc.....

Wow thanks for that

Exactly what I was after

Thanks very much and will let you know how I get on

Thanks again

Marc

Marc something to keep in mind is that most of the newer firmwares require a later can gateway to avoid the flat battery syndrome.
