remote wire for amp not switching off?!

Featured Replies

Hi guys wondered if anyone could help.

I fitted and wired up my sub and amp today went ok but i have hit a bit of a wall :S

i have wired the remote wire from the amp to the blue/white wire on the headunit ( the headunit has a sticker on that shows this to be the right wire). The problem is my amp is staying on when i switch the ignition off. Which obviously it shouldnt. Now ive taken the remote wire out of the amp and the power goes out, does that say anything?

Any ideas would be great as i dont want to keep draining the battery!

cheers :)

does the headunit go off when you take the key out?

Yeh the headunit does go out .

I just cant seem to get the amp to switch off.

How does the remote wire need to connect to the blue and white wire on the headunit?

it sounds like there is something wrong with your headunit loom or you have used the wrong cable.

Is there a solid blue cable too with a connector on it?

Take your headunit out of the dash and turn it on. With it turned on measure the cable you are using on your loom as the remote. Turn it off and the voltage should go to 0v from 12v. As the remove simply works where a 12v signal is sent to the power supply in the amp which tells it to turn on, its nothing more than an ignition live effectively.

Unfortunatly i dont have a voltmeter at home. There is no blue cable on its own no..just the blue and white wire. Do i have to splice the wire and connect the remote wire to it? Ive never had this many problems before. Driving me mad! :D

the remote cable will not run anyware. Simply run from the loom to a connector waiting for you to fit your remote cable to it.

What headunit is it?

Yeh i understand that but how do i connect the remote cable from the amp to the cable on the hu? Its a kenwood kd-r501 i think. Fairly old now but it has been great!

I do think im not wiring it correctly to the hu remote cable.

Ia it a case of wrapping it round the end of the wire? So cut it in half and connect it up?

you shouldnt need to cut anything.

The remote wire coming off the loom should be a cable which goes to nothing and has a connector on it. All you should need to do is connect the corresponding connector to the remote cable from the amp and plug it in

No on my loom it goes from one connector to another so its a straight piece of wire going from one black connector to another. It doesnt go to nothing. That would be easy :D i wish!

Bypass the head-unit and use a switched live from the fusebox instead? ;)

Can you take a picture of your headunits loom?

It sounds very odd as i've never come across an aftermarket unit which does have a cable going to nothing ready for a remote

Have you switched the power connectors around?

Thats if the headunit is loosing its settings or if its staying on when the car is off etc Nothing to do with the remote for the amp as the headunit is turning off etc as it should

you need to remove the blue wire from the plug that goes to the cars loom, on a lot of vag cars there are 2 permanent lives on the plug, one of which goes straight up the remote wire holding power onto anything that's connected to it

Also, do you have a powered aerial?

In my mk2 octy i will have to use the remote feed from the headunit to plug it into. You havn't done this have you?

All sorted now lads thanks very much for you help. I just cut the wire in half and attached the remote to it. Then left the extra part of the wire taped up as it serves no purpose!
