Felicia 1.3 LXI plus wont start!

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and hope that I've posted this in the right place.

I noticed a flickering headlight and flat spot in the rev range last week. It felt like the HT leads might be on the way out or a loose earth strap somewhere but I didn't get round to looking into it in time. Last night the power cut out and this morning the cylinders wont fire at all. The engine turns over and the battery is fully charged.

The only other symptom is the fuel pump makes a weird rumbling noise when I turn the ignition on - before the relay clicks. Sounds like fuel/air sloshing about and there is a quarter of a tank left. I have run the tank very low once or twice this month if that's worth adding? (thinking water in fuel lines maybe?)

I checked the 10 amp fuse for the injectors and its fine. I doubt that every spark plug will have failed at once (it was driving okay yesterday) and all of the connectors were checked this morning when I applied liberal amounts of WD-40 on each one.

Further reading suggests that the voltage regulator might be worn out so I will take this off tonight to inspect it. I'll also check for a spark in each plug.

Does anyone have any suggestions including where to source the parts I need cheaply?

All the best

Ben

Yep I reckon I have definitely posted in the wrong section - sorry!

Moved to Felicia forum.

You could well be right with the voltage regulator as a result you may have blown the ECU fuse which would cause it not to start.

Took the regulator off and the lower brush was very short and stubby. New regulator on order from Skoda £29.74 shipped.

The touch plate inside the alternator has a small ridge in it too - where the longer brush was seated. Is this okay?

Cheers

Before you go taking everything apart... Have you checked you are getting a spark at all?

New voltage regulator was fitted this morning but it still wont fire. It just turns over.

I have a question about the new regulator supplied by Skoda. It has an additional black ring cable long enough to attach to the 10 mm power terminal on the alternator - guess it is an uprated part. Is this correct? Other than that the old and new parts are identical.

Teflon Tom - Yes there is a spark from the coil to the distributor and also too each plug / lead. I'm not sure if the spark is strong enough though. Might need a new coil. Fuel is reaching each cylinder

Is there any way to test the coil pack without buying a new one?

Also how do I know which coil pack I have - I've seen 43 kw and 50 kw packs on ebay for the 1.3 engine?

Other things I have done:

- inspect and clean connectors and earths

- cleaned and copper greased the distributor contacts

- fitted new spark plugs

- aired each cylinder to remove fuel vapor

- charged the battery

- replaced the fuel and engine fuses

Any help would be gratefully received!

Cheers

Ben

I fitted a new voltage regulator to my 1995 LXi last month. The new regulator had the additional black wire which wasn't fitted to the original. I ran it down to earth; seems to work fine.

Don't know why it still won't start assuming all the basics are there?

Yer it doesn't make sense, if you have a spark and there is fuel getting there it should work.

Blocked cat/exhaust? Oh but then you would probably get a spluttery start or at least some attempt at it starting.

Checked air intake?

Is there anyone near you that could give the ECU a scan just to check for anything big/obvious wrong?

Phil

Have you tried changing the HT leads back to the ones before? Maybe you got a duff set?

That happened to me. I had some running problems so got a new set from the motor factors and it got worse. Took them back and they asked if I wanted to try another set so I agreed. The replacements were perfect and sorted the problem!

Thanks for all the replies.

I have ordered a new coil pack after speaking with a Audi / VW mechanic.

Intake and exhaust are clean so I'm hoping that the spark just wasn't strong enough.

I've also had confirmation from Skoda that the additional black cable on the new voltage regulator does go on the battery / power connector (10 mm) of the alternator and not to earth.

Fingers crossed! I will report back when she's up and running again.

Cheers

Oh... I'd best change my black wire round then! Hope you get it going asap.

She's currently purring like a kitten on my drive having had a new coil pack fitted. As a nice treat I'm going to do an oil and filter change now to go with her shiny new NGK plugs.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Ben

Glad its sorted. Thanks for the advice regarding the voltage regulator too.

No probs mate.

Ben

Hello,Ive been reading your post with interest and wondered where you got your parts from?

I live in Jersey and my dealer is a bit slow, if he can be bothered at all!

Hi there

I used Gendan.co.uk and Bickerton Skoda. Good mail service from both. I get generic service items from CES or Unipart..
