Octy vRS diesel 1st impressions

Featured Replies

Bought it and brought it home from Yorkshire last night.

Race Blue estate, 2010, 40k.

Most excellent condition with a few and almost welcome stone chips tbh

.I'd have been suspicious of paintwork having been done otherwise.

Didn't really study the standard spec on these before purchase, but it appears to have a couple of extras already fitted.

Xenons...Not particualary impressed tbh.

Parrot Bluetooth fitted. Marvelous

Rear window tints. Saves me a job to hide my clobber.

Detachable tow bar. Saves me the trouble and expense now!

18" rims without a scuff in sight. Haven't been re-furbed either apparently.

Would rather have had the 17's, but hey ho.

Has a symbol on a switch for resetting what appears to be a tyre pressure monitor?

Doesn't interest me and they really needn't have bothered. just something else to go wrong imo.

This touch screen thing is a bit crazy, but I suppose I'll get used to it, providing I don't crash whilst fiddling with it.

Gearbox is absolutely superb, pulls like a train, enormous room, no rattles, and looks the dogs wobbly bits.

MPG coming home, albeit a bit slow on the M62 due to heavy traffic, was a quite staggering 57 mpg!

All in all, apart from my obvious techno phobia issues, it's GREAT!

Oh yes. just remembered. It's got rear parking sensors too with a little piccy that comes up on that touch sreen thing.

Never had them before but seem pretty damned good!

  • I dont think ive ever read a post from someone who doesnt appear to appreciate the extras on their car so much!! The Xenons are good, certainly better than the halogen setup on the Octavia from expe

  • I don't think the standard headlights are that bad tbh, they light up the A9 and A96 just fine when I head home on the weekends. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2

  • But it isnt the car controlling you though is it. The reason things are "automated" nowadays is because they are trivial and repetitive and are therefore more suited to being controlled automatically

You should be glad of the xenons. Standard headlights are rubbish.

So are these imo.

Headlights on my now departed Combo van were brighter!

Something wrong with them perhaps?

Most disappointing.

Even main beam isn't that impressive, just adequate.

Now we all know about your lighting phobia Mr Ree!

I'm sure if the xenon's lit up the moon you'd still not rate them. Main beam is halogen so against the xenon's they do look weak.

Don't forget to disable the LED DRL's!

I'm guessing there is little point in telling you how you can activate your cornering foglights!? :giggle:

Sounds like you have a nice vRS, well specced too.

Other potential options include:

Auto lights

Auto wipers

Auto-dimming rear view mirror

Maxidot

Cruise Control

Curtain airbags

Sunroof

Full leather

Columbus sat nav

Enjoy!

Oh yes. auto dimming mirror. it's got that. WHY?!! :wall:

Totally pointless, and yet another thing to go duff for the bone idle. Does my head right in.

Auto lights, tick, or should that be a X

Wipers...same. Hate them both on any car.Had experience of them a few years ago on a C5, and NEVER got used to them. Just a cause for much irritaion in my book.

I'D like to tell the car whan I want my wipers and lights on thanks very much .

Cruise...luv it! Got it on the Fabia and would always spec that if poss now.

Maxidot? I dunno.

Is it that big screen with all the radio stations with a squillion options thingy?

Sunroof, not fitted.

Leather is excellent, and no signs of wear on the backrest wing either.

Sat nav? Don't think it's got that, but I'll check the instructions.

Love it with all its silly little electrical nonsensey foibles so far anyways!

Do you think you should have got a bike if you seem so averse to technology that has been developed to make your life easier? You also seem to have bought it without knowing a thing about it!

Can i have all the fancy electrical gubins you dont like please as i want them.

I'll even take them off you for no charge as a favour.

I love things like auto wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror and auto lights. Missus rav 4 has them and i had them on other cars, i think they were great.

Each to their own though but your car sound superb and really well specced. Looks like you picked a good one.

At least you never paid £800 for your xenons. I dont rate them either but dont say this on here as its a sensitive issue.

The Xenons are good, certainly better than the halogen setup on the Octavia from experience but until you try BiXenons you wont see the advantage of the main beam ability. Tire pressure monitor hardly likely to go worng as it simply uses already installed hardware (the ABS sensors) to do the monitoring - its saved me once before by notifying me I had a slow puncture just a fortnight before I was heading to the Autobahn. :) Also, auto dimming rear mirror is valuable when you have someone behind you that has misaligned headlamps. The only thing im not convinced of is the touch screen displapys. They look ace but without doubt you spend more time looking rather than feeling for familiar buttons or knobs. Enjoy the new car.

I know plenty about the car as a car, just some of the daft totally unecessary (IMO) techno bits that puzzle me somewhat...almost find them amusing, and a cracking talking point..

I just want to drive it, not sit there playing with gizmos for geeks . :nerd:

Only just recently discovered what an MP3 player is!!

I'll no doubt get used to them however, especially when I've worked out how to turn some of the stuff off . :sun:

I wouldn't DARE!!

The salesman was as flabbergasted as the majority in here when I moaned and rolled my eyes about it having them.

Wasn't stated in the advert, so i just presumed it had 'normal' cheap to replace ones .

I'm going to have mine checked anyways, as I really do believe there's summat wrong with them.

Excellent point. That's exactly how i feel about it. Does look good though, granted.

Tell me. Can this all singing and dancing 'touch screen' radio be ripped out and a proper one with proper knobs on be put in its place?

There I was, driving along listening to Simon Mayo who was just putting the answer on to yesterdays question regarding wheather dogs can catch a cold off a human and vice versa, when this bloody loud traffic anouncement came on from radio Stoke or somewhere.

Blindingly thumping the screen with my finger as I couldn't take my eyes off the road due the heavy traffic, and it started repeating itself over and over again! :wall:

Had to turn the whole unit off eventually in my utter despair and frustration.

Turned the radio back on when I eventually stopped, and this same ruddy traffic anouncement started all over again!! :swear:

So, CAN dogs catch a cold off a human and vice versa?

Not got a dog so don't give a ****!

Not sure about catching a cold but they cou;d give you the Shih Tzu will then suffer

Not got a dog so don't give a ****!

Me neither, but i know a man that has...and 2 neighbours.

Dead interesting stuff though, answer verysadly interupted by an minor accident on the A5874 leading into Stoke on Trent....several times.

Dreading putting the radio back on again now tbh. Hammer will be at the ready.

Did I tell you I've also got a phobia regarding instruction manuals too btw....before anyone suggests it like.

when this bloody loud traffic anouncement came on from radio Stoke or somewhere.

That's called "TP". It's an RDS feature that can easily be turned off. Even my Radio which has Knobs and no touch screen does this when TP is turned on.

As for all your extra equipment for geeks......I do kind of see where you are coming from with some of the kit.....although the auto wiper set up on VAG cars is pretty good (rarely gets it wrong) I do find it can be a bit annoying. Auto lights I can do without and leave them permanently off. The auto dimming mirrors can come in useful....especially if you have dimming wing mirrors too.

Xenon's in my view are the second automotive wonder of the world (DSG being the first automotive wonder of the world), and I think they are fantastic. I am not going to say any more about them in this thread as I know some people don't rate them considering their cost as an option. However I didn't pay for mine. There is a recent multi page "discussion" re Xenon's should you want to read all about it!

Only a little thing granted, but what a nice touch putting those shopping bag holders in the boot. :bearhug: Now THAT IS cool!!

I know, I'm easily pleased, but those little touches actually do show some thought.

Still VERY pleased with it though, and achieved a staggeringly good 51 mpg with mixed journeys today.

Awesome!

TFFT. I thought you were going to say you were getting rid 1st thing tomorrow and getting an austin A40 instead

There's always one! Normally attention seakers really.

There's always one! Normally attention seakers really.
Meaning exactly? If I'm correct in thinking what I think you mean, surely everybody in here posts to gain attention, or am I missing the point of actually having and using a forum somewhere here?

Just because my views may seem be a bit strange and old fashioned to some, doesn't actually make me an "ATTENTION SEEKER" as you so quaintly put it .

Do have a nice day, and sincere and deepest apologies if the brand of humour i TRY and install in some of my posts doesn't actually appeal to you.

You know what the answer to that one is.

Congrats on your purchase, and glad you enjoy it overall - especially the takeaway hooks in the boot!! :giggle:

Gotta admit I was impressed with them as well - I picked up my first venture into the Skoda world 2 1/2 months ago - a petrol vRS hatch. Awfully impressed by it, but miss some of the 'toys' I had in my old Mondeo ST TDCI.

Some of the things you mention are things I miss like auto dimming rear view mirror, auto lights, auto wipers - even in the 'Fraud', thay worked pretty well!!

I'm loving the touch screen stereo - mine's a 'Bolero'.....and am now ripping all of my CD's to MP3 as I reckon I can get them all on on 32GB card....

One thing I agree on is that - compared to the Mondy - i feel that the standard lights on the Octavia are a bit........hmmm , 'weak' and would have loved Xenons to have been fitted.....but I bought used..... so have to '**** with the c*ck I've got' so to speak! I do however love the LED DRL's though! mine also came with the integrated parking sensors and full leather - which are both great!

Don't wanna hi-jack your thread....but I'm interested in a couple of things....one of which was mentioned by another poster here 'silver1011' ....I'd love to know how to activate my cornering fogs!!! I don't have maxidot though - am I stuffed??

Also - I didn't get a parrot.......but have considered it.....but, I'm keen to know if there is bluetooth module from Skoda or the like that can me retro fitted easily/cheaply (I'm not good at these things!) to the Bolero???

Anyway - back to your thread....enjoy your car Mr Ree!!!

Sincerely hiope you weren't trying to 'seek attention' on that fine post of your Johnny.

Nah, I think you might simply have been relaying your general thoughts, opinions and impressions on your vRS too. actually.

I've rasied a few issues I'm personally having slight difficulty with and finding, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate others contributions input and guidance, so do all, carry on, oh, and do feel free to take the p one double s too.

This old fashioned 'longing for an Austin A40 codger realy does'nt mind. :D

Enjoy your new car,i recently got my dad a 2009 jag x type estate & it has every toy going on it & when he came to pick it up he was a bit overwhelemed by all the toys (he had a 2000 ford focus basic model) now after a few months of using it he is loving it & all the toys & wonders why he didnt do it sooner! only problem is what to replace the jag with in a few years time! :-)
