Octy vRS diesel 1st impressions

Oh bloody fantastic . :(

Thanks for the linky that I've now read and digested, giving meself indegestion.in the process.

Now I know many of you have laughed at and scorned me for my seemingly fairly high level of dislike for modern technology and nonsensical gadgetry, but THIS has just proved my point.

I REALLY enjoyed sweeping the snow off all of the seats on Monday morning....NOT. :@

So you can lower the windows at a distance on a hot day?

WHY? :wall:

I'll have to get it booked in under warranty to VAG commed I presume, and hopefully disable this absolutely and totally useless feature.

Any other annoyances I've yet to discover that can be disabled I wonder anyone?

Must say that after 2 weeks of ownership that I'm still finding this touch screen AND (particulary) the tiny heater directional buttons an absolute PITA.

Only giving my view and opinion before anyone else accuses me of simply looking for things to moan about.

Where's the flamin' cd multi changer hidden then too btw?

Thought they wers standard fitment on the vRS's?

Not in the lh cubby hole in the boot, and not under the seat either.

Multi changer on mine is actually inside the bolero

  • I dont think ive ever read a post from someone who doesnt appear to appreciate the extras on their car so much!! The Xenons are good, certainly better than the halogen setup on the Octavia from expe

  • I don't think the standard headlights are that bad tbh, they light up the A9 and A96 just fine when I head home on the weekends. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2

  • But it isnt the car controlling you though is it. The reason things are "automated" nowadays is because they are trivial and repetitive and are therefore more suited to being controlled automatically

Oh. Hadn't thought of that.

I'll get the manual out and read up on it to see if mine's the same.

Have you not read the whole manual yet? It'll help answer quite a lot of these issues you're raising.

The Bolero contains an in-built 6CD changer.

As said, you can turn off the window feature you have defined as a 'useless' feature. If you have Maxidot fitted to the vehicle. If not contact your dealer to have this done. FYI, 'VAGCOM' is not a piece of dealer diagnostic equipment, they would use the VAS system to do this for you.

Well come on Wardy. It REALLY is a load of ole dogs knackers really, isn't it? :nerd:

Apart from the aforementioned abilty to lower the windows from a distance on a hot day as you aoproach it,doh, what other purpose could it actually have as a benefit?

i think, especially after reading that quite troublesome link content, that the tiny miniscule benefits of it are far far outweighed by the severe disadvantages when it all goes breasts up, as has happened to quite a few others, and now me.

No, but I am taking a couple of days off work next week for the purpose of.

It's like a ruddy encyclopedia!! :mmm:

Now to show that I'm NOT totally against modern technology, I must say, that ion very dark and unlit country roads, the xenons are actually quite good, but what I seemingly discovered last weekend, is that they swivel with the wheel direction too!!

Yes yes, yes, I know I know I know....if I'd read the handbook first I'd have already known about that useful feature.

Had it on my C4 a few years ago, and was in fact on the old Citroens back in the 60's iirc.

Most excellent anyways.

I've never managed to trigger the feature accidentally on the 5 Skodas I've had over the course of 8 years. So I'm really not sure what other owners do with their keys, to accidentally initiate the function. And I'm not really interested either, as the problem is with the user, not with the technology or the feature itself. Simple as that.

I've used the windows up function from time-to-time, if I've forgotten to put the window up by the time I've taken the key out of the ignition. And I've used the windows down function a couple of times, when in hotter places on holiday. Personally, I like to know the feature is there.

To each their own and all that, I understand and appreciate that.

I quite like being able to raise or lower the windows a bit from my office depending on the prevailing weather conditions in summer. Saves going out to the car every time the sun comes out to drop the windows a bit.

Managed to turn those wretched DRL's permanently off today!

Tell you what is just the same and as bad as on the Fabia.

Leaving the lid down on the pull down box, bottom right hand corner of the dash'.

God almighty, it don't 'arf hurt when you crack your shin on it 'cus you've forgotton to close it. :'(

Is this some sort of special advantageous feature that the right hand mirror adjusts the left one identically at the same time?

12v socket doesn't work on the c/console.

Bloody hell man why in the world did you buy a VRS when you hate everything about the car.

Bloody hell man why in the world did you buy a VRS when you hate everything about the car.

Where and when have i actually said that ey?

Correct. I haven't, so get your facts straight before you start sounding off.

Plenty of stuff I like about it.

Load capacity, economy, power, torque, leather, cruise, colour, alloys, finish, looks, ride, cup holders, vfm..

Think that'll do for now IF that's ok with you?

Ok I'll correct myself, why did you buy a car that you dislike most of what makes a VRS unique?

Now THIS needs sorting.

Went out yesterday morning and found ALL the windows were down! :o

Snowy seats greeted me .

wondering how this could possibly have happened, and knowing that you can lower the windows on the Fabia by holding the key in the lock in the unlock position will do this, I messed about with the blippers, and found that if you hold the unlock button down, the windows do indeed lower!

What an absolutely useless pointless and potentially dangerous feature to have installed/programmed in.

I can only assume I must have leant on the fob for a while whilst sitting watching the tv that same evening.

I sincerely hope this can be deactivated. :wall:

Had a hire car when i was working on the olympic stadium / Westfield Shopping centre. It was a VW touran i think nice little thing strangely had limo tints on all the windows looked lowered and had nice alloys and sat nav. It appeared to be the top end model and went pretty well when you pressed the loud pedal. Compared to the Peugeot 307 that my company normally gets me it was a very good car. Anyway Parked up in the old Westield shopping centre carpark put my site PPE on Hi vis jacket, steel toe cap boots, and Hard hat clip board etc. and headed off to the olympic site induction. About 8 hours later got back to said car in carpark and find every window is down. WTF im thinking SATNAV must have been nicked. Nope SatNav still stuck to the window and my mates phone in the glovebox. Amazing i was cursing the car but obviously my fault for pressing the lock button for too long without realising.

I now use the feature all the time on the Octavia's usually hot days for letting the heat out before getting in. But usefull when i get out lock the car and realise the kids have left their windows done i can now raise them from the safety of the pub window :giggle:

Most of the crap (IMO) that's on it isn't unique at all. It's the same nonsense that's fitted to most modern vehicles now.

Must say, I can't believe the number of people that comment on just how good it looks in Race Blue.

Happens virtually every day!!

Have to say that I agree with them too!

Never reliased thougg just how close the colour is to Citroens Poisioden (sp) Blue until I pulled up alongside a Xsara last week at the traffic lights.

Had one of them back in 2002 in that colour and distinctly remember people mentioning and praisning the colour even back then/

Just read this thread...I must say I have found it very amusing.

Do you find it difficult to get a signal on your black and white TV now that we have moved into the 21st Century?

Just why did you buy a vRS?

It clearly isnt the car for you...LOL

I seems to me that a bog standard S model would have been more to your liking

Cobblers. I love it in many ways.

Stop taking all my 'negative comments' so bloody seriously some of you. They are mearly MY observations, and I think you'll find that I have praised it several times.

As the title sez.....FIRST IMPRESSIONS, and that's not to say that I won't end up actually quite liking some of the features I may have previously critisised, i.e. the xenons for instance, especially when I found out that they swivel too.

Absolutely awesome on a twisty country lane, so there!

Still don't see much, if any, advantage on well lit main roads however.

Do carry on slagging me off though if you so wish.

Love mine but I too am a bit perturbed by 'modern cars'. I'm not adverse to getting my hands dirty and say if a problem like a faulty sensor or whatever appeared on any of my,wifes or boys previous cars (Vauxhalls pre 2000) you could just change it and away you go. Now it seems you change the ruddy sensor and then have to get the car 'coded' to accept it. I mean WTF is that all about. Too old in the tooth for all this modern malarkey.

Written from my 2003 Packard Bell desktop, running XP and dreading the thought that I'm going to have to sooner rather than later get something newer.

This is why I've got my old Fiesta to show and enjoy.

Absolute doddle to work on.

I'm no mechanic at all, but even this great ham fisted numpty managed to change an alternator and drive belt in less than 20 minutes.

Can't even see the ruddy alternator on the Octy! :D

Stand by for a barrage of abuse you old git (like me).

Still got an ole b&w portable tv in the loft btw!

Nope SatNav still stuck to the window and my mates phone in the glovebox.

You left the sat nav suckered to the window, in London, for 8 hours!? Normally closed windows don't even stop the theiving buggers.

But then you say the Touran had in-built sat nav?

You sound like me, I often find it easier to take the old trusty TomTom along rather than spending 5 minutes trying to work out how to use the manufacturers in-built sat nav to finally work out you can't even put a full UK postcode in :giggle:

That's another subject. I've got the Nexus nav system in mine and wouldn't mind changing it to the Columbus but then you need a different 'gateway' or some crap to stop battery drain and then you need the right version for 7 digit postcodes and I've no doubt the bloody car needs to be coded to accept the new system. I just go cross eyed at it all and then just think "**** it,I'll stick to what is in there already.

Ree the alternator looks a doddle to get at (you want to do an alternator change on a Vectra v6 if you want difficult) and I'm almost looking forward to the day it'll probably need doing. Might even do it pre-emptively as just 'something to do' on the car.

Yeah hire company don't supply the Satnav disc so we used the companies TOMTOM. and yes im from up north where you can still leave your back door open and nobody would dare nick anything. So stupidly I Left it plugged in and stuck to the windscreen and subsequently all the windows went down on their own. Amazed no one took it. Had £7.75 in the centre console aswell on display. I am now thankfully 'BIG CITY aclimatised' and know to treat it as a foreign country when visiting

I've enjoyed reading this thread.

Mr Ree, it seems you're somewhat of a grumpy-old-man when it comes to modern technology and I have to admit that I'm heading that way too! Be proud of it, having a little common sense is nothing to be ashamed of! ;)

And to all you 'haters', listen to what the guy says, he ENJOYS his car! Surely it's all about the driving experience in the end anyway?

Cracking thread! :D

You can turn it off/on via Maxidot, sometimes reading the user manual really helps. Then again, having a user manual is a useless and far-fetched feature. So stay away!

Now YOU Mr Sunset....what an absolutely crackin; user name btw :sun: ...are my new friend in here!!

Talk mucho sense.

Now there is one feature on the car that 'the jury' is still out on.

This automatic dipping mirror malarky.handy that you don't have to keep flipping the lever up and down, yes, but don't really think they dim the mirror as much as the manual ones, and anywway, it's yet another case of the car controlling you which isn't good imo.
