Air filter service intervals

Featured Replies

Hi all just a quick one on air and fuel filter(diesel) service intervals on my 2005 1.9 PD 130 AVF the manual calls for 60k (kms) intervals probably 40k (miles) on UK cars, I appreciate it depends on conditions but I am using 45k(kms) intervals as I believe this is long enough.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts/experiences on this,

For the £20 price of an air filter and fuel filter personally I change them every service (10k miles).

Looking at the state of an air filter after 10K miles, I'd rather change it and know it's effective than leave it another 20K, no matter what the service schedule says. With regard to the fuel filter, it is so easy to change once again for the price it's not worth not doing it.

In my opinion, of course.

Under average UK conditions, 20k miles would be the longest I would leave an air cleaner in service. I would also knock the dirt from the element pleats and clean out the air box (removal is necessary) at 10k miles. Turbocharged engines shift a lot of air.

Inlet restriction caused by a dirty or non-spec air cleaner is one of the worst areas of neglect in a turbocharged engine. A depression at the intake caused by a blocked element will cause oil to be drawn past the compressor shaft seals and will increase oil usage. The standard air cleaner assembly is a very effective design in terms of performance (pity they didn't think about maintenance time - compare Toyota) but the specified service interval is too long.

UK fuel is very clean - unless you buy fuel from odd places, 30 k mile changes are fine for an engine which uses so little fuel. Avoid Chinese filters.

Yep - if you're going to leave an air filter element in for a while, an airline comes in handy for giving it a good blow clean every 10K.

Another useful thing - Lidl/Aldi occasionally do a flexible crevice tool vacuum cleaner attachment which is handy for sucking the loose cr4p out of the airbox/plenum chamber/etc.

Mind you, if you're going to take the stupid fiddly airbox lid off, you might as well just change the filter anyway.

I agree with RD regarding fuel filter - no need to change it that often, I just tend to because it's easy and cheap.

You can buy a version of that flexible tool all year long from Clas Ohlson:

Blimey. I paid 3.99 for mine :-)

Ah, but did you get the cool little brush with it... :-p

No... no I didn't.

Can't say I've ever missed it though :hi:
