Thanks guys. Pictures are to follow.

To add to this, late mk3 Golf GTI 8v and 16v, & VR6 (1995 >) also also have 288mm as standard front, and 256mm rear.

It's the Audi TT 225bhp 312mm brakes that we need for the front brake upgrade isn't it?

Yes.

Excellent write up :)

Well done mate. Should definitely be a sticky

The hat comes off again.

Epic.

Is it required to take the calipers off to paint?

To bump this awesome thread with a question;

Upgrading my mk1 fabia vrs from the stated 288mm? to 312mm, I will need just carriers and discs from either

Audi TT-Quattro (225hp)

Audi TT-Quattro (180hp)

VW Golf anniversary

Golf GTI AUQ

Skodá Octavia VRS

VW Golf V5 170

Is this correct? I assume it will be easier to get the entire set up from some of those cars. (sellers unlikely to split caliper and carrier)

Also from the donor vehicles listed are any of their rear brake set ups suitable for direct swap too?

E.g. Find a donor car and take all four corners!

VW Golf V6 4 Motion

Hi you can't just change the carriers on these with the Tt carriers as the calipers are not compatible. Don't go for 4 wd rear as the carriers don't fit properly. I have full kits available if needed.

Regards dave

What prices are we talking about pal? Thanks for the info too.

Is it required to take the calipers off to paint?

not at all. just get a small artists paint brush for the tight bits and a half inch brush for the rest. start with the small brush around the pads where you dont want paint

Think my rears need a overhaul, so was thinking of getting 256mm set up, however been on ebay but I've just been bombarded with loads..

Does anyone know the 'going rate' of say a used/new caliper/carrier set up for the rear 256mm?

I guess ECP/TPS/ebay are the usual places for new discs and pads? Is it worth going for something good at the rear or just standard stuff, since its the rear..

Thanks in advance!

Literally yesterday I saw a set of octavia rears sell for 72, they were in green and needed pads but discs were Ok.

Just to give you a price indicator.

I was going to bid but decided to leave them and bid on the front set up, which I won! £130 for the full front 312mm set up :)

Thanks for that,

I found this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Bora-golf-GTI-rear-brake-caliper-With-Carrier-Complete-Perfect-working-order-/290902063139?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43bb1d3823

~ £52 for calipers and carriers (assuming they have both sides).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seat-Leon-Mintex-Rear-Brake-Discs-And-Pads-256mm-Vented-/260836702852?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbb143a84

£65 for the pads/discs.

Totaling ~ £117.

Is that the kind of price Im looking at if Im being impatient?

Are there any issues with calipers that have no branding (Lucas) stamped on them?

Mate I've just found this thread, exactly the info I was after. Thank you so much for posting all that up!

Hero!

Does that mean the Golf 4 Motion rear calipers/carriers won't fit the Fabia vRS??

There is a reason why, I just can't think of it right now haha. I'm sure if you have a search about you'll find the answer fairly easily dude :)
