Yes, a car driver turned across my path and the rubbish old style engine protectors bars

from the 1970's took my leg off against the bikes tank.

He just nicked against the bars.

OUCH. Not good mate. Exactly why i dont ride anymore. Scary scary stuff. Shame really as i absolutely loved my bikes, i have seen my old triumph speed triple a few times driving about and it breaks my heart every time. What a bike. Threw it up the road at over 100mph but i still loved it. I was certainly the weakest link in most of my accidents but i have been a very lucky boy and i think i used all my good luck up hence why i dont ride anymore.

That's grim George. I remember when those bars were all the rage, though I was still riding old brit bikes then, so never had any on my bikes.

+1 on this mate. I had a few REALLY close ones on my blade and got rid of it after 5 years as I was riding it less and less and figured it was going to be just a question of time before I lost either bits of me or my licence. Liked the Beemer but I ended up riding that less and less, so sold that too in the end, though it was good fun chasing the sports bikes through the bends which used to really p them off. The telelever suspension and ABS was a wicked combo. both were sad days as they were ridden off by the new owners.

I debated getting a bike once but couldn't justify it with the weather being bad here so not used as much, higher risk of an accident then the hassle of storage, another test, insurance, etc

The fastest car I've driven is an Ariel Atom, which is verrry fast. However, my ZZR1400 was in a different league. In terms of straight line performance, nothing on four wheels can touch a big bike unless you're talking million pound hyper cars or heavily modified stuff.

In the twisties, often the tighter the turns get, the more advantage the car has, but there's often not much in it. When Top Gear raced the Atom 500 against the BMW1000RR, the Atom won, but what they didn't tell you was that the bike was faster than every other car that had been round there. It also suffered with the bumpy track so it might have been a different story if the track was smooth.

It would have been interesting to see the running and purchase costs compared for the two - the Atom is completely out of reach for most people whereas the BMW and other superbikes are well within reach for both buying and running.
