Head gasket gone but no over heating or water in the oil

Featured Replies

Hi I've just put my Vrs into have the cambelt at water pump done , it's been losing water for around a month not much just cup fulls . I've been told my head gasket has an hole in it and its pressuring the water tank . But theys been no over heating or water in the oil and wet carpets , could this sound right ??

I had a car do this a few years ago. The head gasket failed between a water gallery and a piston.

The only symptom was a pressurised water tank when the engine was running, and slight water loss. I actually ran the car like this for over a year before getting rid of it.

Mine did exactly the same last year no normal symtoms just looseing water

Is it not normal to have a pressurised water tank when the engine is running?

Mine has been doing this since October still doing it light come on every week just top it up but if I boot it then it comes on 5 mins after havnt got round to changing it yet due to this **** snow

Yes, but only to a max of 15psi or so.

When it happened to me, if I removed the cap to the expansion bottle when the engine was running, the coolant would immediately bubble up and spew out of the expansion bottle.

Some correct me if I am wrong but I'm pretty sure all vehicles do that when hot ?

Or are you talking about all the time even from cold in which case would make more sense I guess.

Yes, even if you took the cap off with the engine running and coolant cold, it would still spew out.

Mines grand when cold, never opened it when warm (afraid too haha) would that suggest mine is fine? My light comes on over a period of about 5-6weeks maybe more

Possibly, or just in very early stages of failure, or it's leaking from somewhere else?

Yeh I've checked but can't see anything, its such a small lose if its leaking from somewhere its gonna be hard to spot!

You do realise that ALL garages are obligated to confirm the work before proceeding, if you ask them to quote before doing any work.

If they have done this and just writing a blank cheque with you then you probably are within reason to question this and bring up with the citizens advice bureau for further help.

Here is one link may be useful (simply found by searching garage charges lol)

http://www.bis.gov.u...s/file28053.pdf

Remember:

the law says that any services you buy must be:

carried out with reasonable care

and skill;

carried out within a reasonable

time at a reasonable charge (if

no charge is agreed in advance);

and that any goods supplied must

be of satisfactory quality.

If you told them you wanted to know the details and estimate of cost BEFORE they proceeded (which is only sensible) then they have NO right to just do the work whatever they want for work they say needs done
