Oil light

Featured Replies

Hi hope some of the knowledgable people on this site can help as I have exhausted all other avenues.for the past 6 weeks or so my 2011 octavia 1.6 cr diesel has been periodically flashing the red low oil pressure light at first I got skoda assistance out and they diagnosed faulty oil pump so I left car into garage and they said they found metal filings in sump and decided not to replace oil pump as they thought there may be engine damage so I took it to another garage had pump replaced along with new oil and filter the oil hadn't been changed for over 40.000 miles it now has 100.000 collected car this morning drove about 40 miles no light and I thought its fixed only to my annoyance it came on flashed 3 times went off car driving great no abnormal noise please help at the end of my tether not to mention bank balance thanks in advance

Probably wants a new engine as the first garage advised.

Going to try new oil pressure switch as final resort just need car to hold out until June I'm thinking recon engine would be very expensive

Has the oil pressure been checked?

  • Author

No one seems to have equipment to pressure test I have asked but because oil light comes on very randomly and never at idle they say pressure test won't work

Why was the oil & filter not changed for 40,000 miles? If serviced correctly the warranty is unlimited mileage for the first two years. Filings in the sump suggests poor lubrication and mechanical damage, as Tech1e said probably needs a new engine.

Anyone no where I can get recon engine 1.6 cr diesel I'm in belfast

The oil pressure warning won't read under 2,500 rpm anyhow. As for equipment how specialist is an oil pressure gauge? Every garage should have one. And if they haven't checked it how on earth can the diagnose anything? Baffles me how people won't do even the most basic of checks.

Sounds like worn main bearings - I had a similar problem some years ago. Would explain metal filings in the sump too

An oil light requires immediate attention. It could be it could be no oil, a failed sensor, or other even nastier things. No oil pressure means a wrecked engine soon. Only time for me was with a works Transit, it was less than 100 metres.

As you are finding out, the old adage, Oil cheap engine expensive, always holds true.

As said it probably needed a new engine from the start. Take it back to the numptys that put the new pump on it, it's their baby now.

Hi guys up date on oil light have found if I keep temperature guage below normal with heater on oil pressure light doesn't come on any ideas it's going in tomorrow to get oil pressure switch changed have already changed oil pump, oil filter and three oil changes in three weeks just came across keeping temperature just under normal by chance but it does keep warning light from coming on

Well, it could be that keeping the oil temp down, means the viscosity stays lower, which means the pressure will run higher. Does it come on at idle, and go out when you increase engine speed?

The light never comes on at idle

I drove on motorway today 70mph no light as soon as I left m1 and slowed light came on but because of snow I had heater on full and realised that light wasn't coming on

I'm a taxi driver and light doesn't come on at idle doesn't come on at high speed only seems to come on when town driving but I have found if I turn heater on full around town light doesn't come on

The fact that its done 40k without a oil change & there were metal filings in the oil/sump says to me its game over for the engine, why the garage replaced the oil pump when they found the filings is beyond me.New engine time!

Problem solved electrical fault on oil pressure switch good job I didn't change engine eh

Glad you got it sorted,id be a bit worried about the metal filings found in the sump though & no oil change for 40k has shortened the engines life, let us know how long it lasts before it goes bang!

I've had the exact same problem,i've tried everything, where exactly was the electrical fault on the oil pressure switch?
