Is the new Octavia a match for the current Superb?

Featured Replies

It is all a matter of personal taste as Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

When making my choice, we felt the new Octavia to be euro-boxy bland. On the other hand the f/l Superb exuded individuality.

Agreed its down to personal choice - having already owned a Superb I knew what I was getting, and I was disappointed that the facelifted version made zero changes to the interior - the layout is unchanged, the Columbus is the same non-DAB version (at least there's no mention of DAB on the Superb web pages), the driver display electronics are unchanged, the options list (on the Greenline) is unchanged [less actually as heated rear seats now aren't an option!] which all meant that replacing my current Superb with another was only an option for me if the Octavia was too small - why facelift only the exterior and not take the opportunity to put in some more up-to-date tech and freshen-up the interior?

I've been really pleased with my Superb, but as the OP posed the question of whether the Octavia was a match, and I had hands-on experience of both I thought I'd add my 2p :)

Oh, and as for looks, there ain't much in it for me - two peas in a pod :)

Thanks, you've just convinced me that replacing my '12 plate Superb Elegance with a F/L version is a costly waste of time, especially as Skoda no longer sell the 2.0 L TSi!

(We own our own cars, are retired & do quite low annual mileages so the cheaper running costs & better BIK figures from the diesel models, aren't relevant to us, & we both like the better performance too.)

As for replacing our Superb with a TSi vRS Octy 3, yes it's a more modern car with better electronic toys, but it's missing many of  the std equipment items to be found on a Superb Elegance.

The Octy Elegance can be optioned to compete with the Superb, at a cost but it's lumbered with the cheap rear suspension, & is unavailable here with the "sweet" 1.8 TSi engine.

So, I either loose some of my comforts, spend a small bucket of cash & buy a brand-new vRS estate in the next two days, or keep my low mileage Superb for another year or so, & also keep my ancient but much beloved V6 Mondeo estate for the load lugging duties.

(The running costs of a 2nd car have to be taken into account, to keep the Mondeo on the road costs about £1400 per year, including depreciation & servicing, so it's a cheap car to own, especially when compared with the annual depreciation on our two current Skodas!)

Decision time, watch this space............

Those car makers really know what they are doing when putting different models to the market :)

First they launch new model of C segment (Octavia, Golf 7 Variant) and some buyers will chose them over older version of D segment. You might ask why to buy VW Passat when Golf 7 Variant is almost the same size (and the same looks). Also C class Mercedes is just 90% of E class.

Later on they renew D class model to bigger and 'better' and some C class buyers go back to D class. And so on.

VW renewing Passat in 2014, so Superb will get a new platform from 2015 (my guess).

I've had two Superb's ran a 170 bhp Elegance for 4 years Brilliant motorway Cruiser, the Drive firm Bielefeld to nottingham was a Breeze no pains and excellent Economy, then ran a 140bhp SE for a Year gut less in comparison but did The Trip on less than three quarters of a tank, in comparison the Octy mk3 VRS it's rubbish as a motorway mile muncher i have Aches and pains whilst cruising through france to Dunkirk Never had this in the superb, it's a heck of a Lot noisier, but a hoot to Drive fast, packed full of tech and i think Looks rather menacing ( well Mine do's). Just Makes me Wonder how expensive the mk3 Superb is gonna be oooh comes to mind.

I ran a company Superb II Twindoor 170 CR Elegance for 4 years and it was undoubtedly the best car I've had. When I was due to change last May, I ordered mid March, I could have had a new pre-FL Superb II same spec as mine plus ventilated leather for £22k which was only about £1k more than I paid for the Octy III, but in the end, it was the fact that I wanted a change of interior with the latest technology and the fact that it still met the needs of a growing family that swung it for me. Having subsequently seen that the FL Superb II did not really move the interior on, I'm on the whole glad I switched to the Octy, it is as wide as the Superb across the rear bench, has enough rear knee room for a 2 adult and small child sandwich, although the Superb was like a limo in terms of rear knee room! What I do miss about the Superb is the bomb proof build quality, the Octy interior looks good but on quality of materials it just can't quite compete, although the new technology in the Octy does blow the Berb out of the water!

I think I will be very interested in the Superb III when it arrives, if they can maintain the build quality of the current Berb and upgrade the technology with all the kit from an Octy III, it will be one hell of a good car!

Cracking objective and honest post by mat. Nice one mate.

That is if they maintain the current layout/style of the Superb for the MkIII - if you look at the model line up, with the introduction of the Rapid, everything has shuffled up and grown in size. The Rapid is where is the Mk1 Octavia was, and as the MkIII Octavia has grown slightly, the view is that the Superb III "could" be an SUV type vehicle and not necessarily a conventional saloon/hatch/estate.

Autocar article on their website yesterdaysuggests will be saloon/estate but no twindoor. This from Skoda press release iirc

Skoda is planning SUV (bigger than yeti) in 2016.

Superb III will be most likely based on 2015 Passat. And Passat 2015 will be bigger than today's Passat. Everything gets bigger those days :)

Hi KennyD

£26000?

In November 2013 ordered a Superb L & K: build date Jan 2014 so still waiting.

£4585 trade in. £20,485 to change with spare wheel from a Manchester dealer.

Just added hill hold last week.

Within your price range?

John

I've seen similar suggestion in Auto Express a few issues ago, issue 1297, that they will do a new Superb saloon and estate, but no hatch or twin door option, and also a couple of new SUV's, one based on the next VW Touareg which will include a seven seat option, probably called the Snowman! The Yeti will remain and a smaller SUV will also slot into the range below Yeti to replace the Roomster.

i have an 07 plate octavia vrs estate that i use mainly for work. back seats un-clipped to allow more room. i love the car, engine and torque and it goes like a train but i'm getting old and fed up the harsh ride.  I had a drive of the new octavia 150 PS and was thoroughly unimpressed with the power. then tried the 170 superb with dsg and made my mind up in minutes. Alot more power and  much smoother ride. Superb elegance seems the spec to go for with some good upgrades from the SE (although i'd prefer the SE alcantra seats) As space is critical to me i took a tape measure.. Skoda advertise the new ocatvia as been wider and longer than the previous model, however the space behind the seats is the same all bar a few millimeters. the Superb looks a much bigger car but has the same width between the internal wheel arches as the  octavia.but is 80mm longer and slightly higher. will probably opt for the manual box over dsg for greater fuel consumption and co levels. seen some v.good prices from on-line sellers compared to dealerships saving 4k on a new model. has anyone any experience of these?

My parents are getting a brand-new facelifted Superb (picking it up this weekend!). They tested the Yeti and Octavia 3 as well, and felt that the Superb 'just drove better' and felt more solid than the Octavia. They weren't looking for something particularly fancy in terms of spec, they've gone for a 1.4 TSI S estate in Pacific Blue with just parking sensors added, but as it's got the things they need (big boot and rear space, good safety kit, simple aircon as mum can't work climate control, simple radio with nice big buttons etc) without things they don't (satnav, leather, automatic anything!). They got the 0% finance deal with 'free' servicing, and got a good price on the car by comparing prices with online brokers. They've even convinced some friends to go out and buy a Fabia! They considered the SE, but felt that they didn't need another 'posh' car as dad's got a 320d company car with a fair few toys on it.

I'm rather jealous
