Does this mpg sound right?

Done 586 miles on a full tank and averaged 53mpg which I confirmed by brimming it again and working it out. Mostly motorway either doing 50mph (cos of snow) or 75ish and a little town driving.

Does that sound about right? Some people reckon they get 60+ but I've never got over 57 on a run.

would expect around that mark out of mine if not slightly less .... i am also interested how people get 60+ mpg as i have never managed to achieve it

I've had 66 at best, but that was on a 55mph motorway journey. Mpg will be lower in winter due to additives being put in diesel to stop it freezing (or something like that) I've found that the best thing to do is avoid braking as much as physically possible and accelerate gently, you might then get higher mpg figures :)

ive never managed to get this i got 55 mile to a tenner this week ???? which to me is terrible and i drive worse than a grandad never do more than 60 on a motorway

I don't have a vRS, but a 1.9 TDI. (Book combined is 57 mpg)

My brim to brim figure is around 63 mpg (10% better then book combined figure), but I have to drive it carefully to get that. The vRS book combined figure is 53 mpg, so if I owned one I'd expect 58 mpg out if it (using my careful fuel saving techniques).

In my experience, to get better than 10% over book figures on the Fabia, you really have to drive it using every hypermiling trick in the book, my personal record is 69.5 mpg on a 20 mile commute home from work, but I don't think I touched the brake pedal once, and I had to drive so carefully (and concentrate so hard) that I couldn't have kept it up much longer.

Of course If you go on a motorway and set the cruise control to 50 mph and drive for 100 miles you will probably see high 60's mpg easily, but I've never driven my Fabia over about 30 miles yet.

But to get back to the original question....53 mpg is the book combined figure for the vRS, so that's not a bad figure over the course of a full tank.

55 miles to £10 of diesel is pretty horrendous......36 mpg. But not beyond the realms of possibility if driven hard, in town on short trips.

you said £10, it all depends on how much per litre so @ £10 divide by say £1.39 per litre is 7.19 litres, not much fuel Big deano, best to do it to say 10 litres i worked out my car will get roughly 10 miles to 1 litre of fuel, i've adopted the brim tank method and i'm saving a trip a month to the garage,

v-power is giving me more mpg compared to tesco, i'm now trying esso this refill. best i've managed is 520 miles with 70 left on trip computer. tesco i've done 490 miles, with 70 left on trip computer but i can still put 50 litres in the fuel tank.

The best mpg on my trip over 9 miles has been 90mpg @ 40 mph. on the motorway can average 58 odd mpg @ 60 mph. have managed back from minehead 68 mpg @ 70 mph.

i'm happy with the mpg that i'm getting, car is standard.

My average over 2k miles is 40.2mpg (arl 150 tdi)

Anything over 40mpg combined is good

Best thing to do is see how long you can go on the motorway without braking just using your accelerator and the right gear. This will improve your mpg and your ability to anticipate people and hazards on the road. YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Try it with the radio off it will increase your concentration.

Please stop working out distance against cost especially over small distances/volumes as a small margin of error makes a massive difference and fuel prices vary, you could be filling up with premium at which point you get less compared to someone buying regular, this is why the standard is miles against distance, also the price nationally varies considerably so my £10 may buy more or less than yours even if we use the same fuel. Next it's winter, the refinery supplying your garage with fuel will have switched to winter fuel additive packages ages ago, you will get lower mpg. Diesels are considerably more thermally efficient so take an age to get the coolant (never mind the oil) up to temp, if you're not driving that many miles at once then buying a diesel was probably a bad choice for economy as you're not going to see decent mpg figures, your car will still be attempting to over fuel to compensate for the lower air temps and the fact it hasn't reached it's optimum temp. Finally tyre pressures drop as much as 1psi per 10 degrees below the temp when you checked them and low traction in the snow (I did 40 mph will barely moving today) will skew your distance results.

The only accurate way to calculate mpg is brimming the tank and averaging the results over several tanks, I have hit mid 30's and mid 50's on my petrol mpi but it manages a lifetime average of 41.x mpg or 14.x pence per mile which is almost exactly what the last tank I filled gave me, if you did do 55 miles for £10 then you're paying over 18p a mile which is amazing for all the wrong reasons, to illustrate the point if you'd done 60 miles for £10 you'd be paying 16p, and if you're working to the fuel gauge/light that's well within it's margin of error.

You can't rely on the MPG readout on the computer either. Mine is 7% innaccurate. You have to brim to brim to get accurate figures. And as Avalon says, in winter you can expect an overall reduction in MPG.

Saying that lads I spent problys around 200metres worth of that struggling in the snow in second spinning so maybe not all bad.

But like said cold weather performs better = worse mpg

A think the older the car gets aswell doesn't help

My computer is always either spot on or abit below what I work it out to be. To be fair it doesn't seem to of gone down with it being given with it being winter its always around the same.

I never keep braking anyway, it's one of my pet hates when people "check" their brakes every 5 seconds on the motorway or if there's a slight bend in the road.

My tank only holds 45 litres!

Do you not use the overflow tank?

when you fill your tank, so no more can be put in and just look inside the fuel neck and press that black switch, it enables you to empty the expansion gap of air and you keep filling until no more diesel goes into the neck (brimmed), next refill do the same, then can workout average mpg, divide miles into fuel litres then x 4.5 gives you the gallons (4.5 litres to a gallon). fill tank twice instead of three times a month.

So there is an actual black switch?

is it in the metal tubing or what?

Its like cylindrical lever... You push it down with the diesel pump and you can hear the air escape

Then fill up slowly (you'll get another 5l in)

Its in the filler neck (where u put the diesel in)

53mpg sounds fair in this cold weather as youll be running electrics too.

The other time I get less than 50mpg isif I do a lot of stop start cold town driving then it's 35ish but just wondered cos I see a lot say they get 60+

53mpg sounds excellent. Over the last 6 months I ave averaged 50.3 mpg (calculated) with a mix of driving. I have never seen better than 57mpg indicated as an average on the computer even when travelling slowly (~65mph) on the motorway.
