Euro driving, beams..

Featured Replies

Hi all, i know i should of put this in Octy section but wanted to get most response.

Going back over to Germany in a few month and dont want to be anti-social this time, how do i flatten the beams?

Someone mentioned before about a switch? Then i read i have to remove the headlight unit? Surly not! Anyone give me a detailed plan of attack?

Its the pre FL vRS with Xenon's if that makes any difference.

Thanks! :)

you got Maxi-Dot? Sure I read something about changing xenon beams in Maxi-dot for driving on the wrong side somewhere

Oh yeah sorry..im poverty, no Maxidot :(

I didn't think you had OEM xenon's?

Halfords beam benders then for you m'lady LOL

You have to remove the headlight but that's very easy to do.

The whole process is still quicker and cheaper than those beam bender stickers.

The beam can still be flattened without maxidot and xenon's, you need to remove the headlight and flip a lever.

The process is all but identical on the FL and pre-FL...

Undo the nylon securing nut on the back of light cluster...

Push the small black square tab and pull the hook on the side of the light cluster to unlock and release the headlight unit forward...

(Light cluster released)

Remove the main larger rubber cap...

Now the 2 metal levers are visible they appear to be on a bezel and moving one also moves the other simply move to opposite position...

Reassemble in reverse order and job done. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Final result.

Thats great thanks Silver.

Now daft question, shall i do this while in the UK or while in Germany do you think? I might pull the headlights out while ive got plenty of time so i know what im doing later on and not end up hours before setting off with a headlight that wont go back in!

I'd do it in the UK, it doesn't affect the throw of the headlight beam enough to cause any issues with night driving in the UK.

I've been thinking of doing this to mine to get rid of the kick up to the left after fitting 4300k HID's, apparently the flat beam will pass the UK MOT as long as the lights are correctly aimed.

As far as im aware i think we will crossing countries during the day time but i have my lights permanently turned on (via vagcom) so knowing my luck some plucky copper will be funny with me.

Cant wait to go, much rather go to Germany then on a beach holiday :)

Germany is lovely.

We go A LOT as my partner is German.

How are you getting there and where are you going?

We're going again in March and going via Hull and coming back via Newcastle.

Phil

P.S. I'm sure you'll enjoy the Autobahnen!

Your wife is German! Arnt you close by Phil? Or i remember you saying your moving.

Im making a attempt at learning the language and so far so good but id like to have talks with a native.

We're going late march, going Hull to Rotterdam. Ive only been once and i fell in love with the country, well the 'country side' part it..obviously Nurburg aswell :)

Been on the Autobahn but didt max it out, i never feel right revving a derv too high. She makes 130 so thats enough for me!

My Husband is German actually.

I live in York so not far away at all.

I've getting there with the language but as the Germans say "Deutsche Sprache, schwerer Sprache" (German language, hard language).

We love going via Hull as it's only down the road from York and means that we can go straight down after work and jump on the ferry.

I like all of the country and not just the country side bits.

You've gotta max your car out on the Autobahn... it's a must. I got a GPS speed of 138mph out of our standard Seat Cordoba PD130. Was quite impressed!

I'm also going to attempt getting the lights out at one point for a trial run of flicking the beam (glad I got the spelling of "beam" right there!). Just glad not to have to fiddle about with electrical tape or round stickers on the lights this time. Hate all that sticky stuff on the lights!

Phil

I'd have thought your elegance would had maxidot so you can just change the setting in there surely Phil?

It's a Pre-FL and doesn't have Maxidot so unfortunately not.

Phil

Ah right, I thought that all DSG/Elegance had maxidot as standard spec.

I think on the FL it became standard but pre-FL it was a £250-ish option.

Shame as it would be nice to have but I can live without it and I have VCDS and a netbook for all the other changes I want to make.
