DSG D2 vs 1 (manual)

Crawling along in traffic this morning with the engine just ticking over the DSG selects D2.

I then moved the selector over to manual and the box selects 1 but the speed and revs remain the same.

Move back to auto and the box selects D2 with revs and speed remaining the same.

How does that work?

That suggests that D2 and 1 (M) are the same ratios - which they can't be.

Anyone else notice this?

Can anyone explain why this happens?

I have noticed that it uses D2 but not tried pushing across to manual to see what happens.

What I have noticed is that if crawling on tickover it will say "2" then if you put your foot down a bit to go it then feels like it engages the clutch for a change so I wonder if when it says 2 it means that 2 is preselected and that gear will be used if/when you use some more throttle but in actual fact it's got 1st engaged.

Mine does this too. It does go into 1st if you come to a complete standstill, but if you are crawling in traffic....even below walking pace, it often stays in 2nd.

It is definitely in 2nd as when you move it into manual it goes into 1st, and you can fell the difference in ratio when you touch the throttle.

The only theory I thought of was that it is deliberately programmed to do this to try to even out wear on the two clutches. The "even" gear clutch would normally not suffer any wear at all as the car is always moving when these gears are selected, whereas the odd gear clutch is constantly used for moving off from a standstill in 1st, and would wear more as a result.

Think you might be right there.

It seems like it's normal anyway then. It's smooth in crawling traffic in mine and no complaints as to how it reacts etc in traffic.

Sounds reasonable. I agree that you have a different throttle response when in M1 compared to D2.

However, I would have expected the speed to change when moving from M1 to D2 whilst keeping the throttle in the same position i.e. not touching it

My superb always crawled along in D2, only selecting 1st upon coming to a complete stop. There is no point in being 1st crawling along since it usually results in jerky progress due to the engine response. The DSG 1st gear is very short, so even if you select manual and then move to 1st the car may ignore you completely and stay in second even though the display shows 1. First will then be selected when the ECU determines it is safe to do so smoothly, ie. almost a complete stop.

Next time instead of switching to manual, try S mode instead as this tends to hold all the gears almost to the red line.

Driving a manual gearbox, i prefer to crawl along in second, and moving to first usually gives a horrible jerk as its selected due to engine braking unless you apply loads of throttle to rev match the gear. You cannot do this with DSG unless you want to run into the car in front as your foot stays in the same place so to maintain smoothness 1st is usually left out unless required to move off.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself very well.

Driving along without my foot on the throttle in auto the car will be in D2, doing lets say 10mph and 900 rpm.

If I then move the selector to M it goes into 1st gear and still does 10mph and 900 rpm. I have not touched the throttle, just moved the selector to M.

If I then move the selector back to auto without touching the throttle my speed stays the same as do the revs.

I appreciate that driving along in D2 gives a smoother ride that M1 etc.

What I don't understand is how for the same throttle position i.e. foot off the acelerator, my speed (and rpm) remains the same for both D2 and M1 - it should not at the ratios must be different.

I suspect it isn't physically moving into 1 even though it says it on the screen.

I bet if you put it to manual and then put your foot down a little it would go to 1st but while crawling with no throttle input it will still stay in 2nd as it thinks that's the best gear to be in until you decide you want to go faster then it will go along with 1st that you selected.
