Yeah there are a lot of early ford focus around that work with my budget,I've looked at so many cars on piston heads and autotrader that I'm starting to get annoyed with myself that I can't make my mind up on what I want lol

Ive been in the same position with my luxury barge buying. Hours and hours pouring over ads on autotrader and pistonheads.

I think there are cambelt issues with them. They need done every 30k which may or may not be an issue. Still, my old one, a 2001 (Y) 90hp, is still going. I see it in Dundee every so often (just checked, still taxed). Great car I regret selling it.

I'd get a little Corolla to run around in, dead reliable, try and get one of the older type of engine "EFE" tyre and not the VVT-i as they are a bit of an oil burner.

(Speaking from experience and owning a Mk2 Fab vRS here)

Mate had an old corolla diesel he commuted in for years. Did starship mileages for pennies but rot got it in the end. Might be worth a look if you can find a solid one.

The very early D4D corollas are bullet proof. They start on a Y plate

You could alway go for a bit of luxury.

You can get some nice Jags at the moment and they are cheap to insure as no one wants big engines these days.

You would get a nice 4.0 XJ6 around 97/98 for under a grand and they drive very well. Just poor on fuel.

also plenty of cheap soft tops around at the moment.

Don't think a big jag is really my kinda car lol I've seen a couple of Mazda mx5 within budget I'd imagine they are fun to drive

Id suggest a 6N2 as long as the gearbox is ok. Mine was fixed, replaced and fixed again which detracted a bit from it being an utterly brilliant car. GTI, coilovers, ATS Cups, factory leather etc. But for cheap and reliable I'll suggest a 9N Polo too. They must be a grand now?

Owned 3 mk1 MX5s and they're great. But if truth be told, i liked my Polo GTI better. As quick, as fun to drive, as easy to get spares for could carry 2 bikes and 2 loads of kit and beer for a weekend away. I didn't go sideways around wet roundabouts as well though ;)

Polo gti's are crap!

Gearboxes made of cheese. And why would any1 want to commute in a sardine tin is beyond me

Yep, theres a lot of internet hearsay to say they're rubbish  . Unfortunately for the rumour, they're actually excellent (as long as you get one with a good 'box - they are out there or get a refurbed one).

Mine has a receipt for a £600 box refurb and clutch (I think that was it, anyway. It might have been £600 without a clutch). Pretty much the same price as a turbo . . .

I've given mine some abuse and it's still going strong so far though. Doesn't feel the nicest box in the world, but it's pretty accurate IMO, if a little long in the throw. The clutch on the other hand . . . it takes getting used to!

Friend of mine always swore by Volvo. Currently he's got a 2002 Volvo V40 1.8
