By applying it. You need a card/ plastic tool to iron out the air bubbles which can cause scratches.

I've since found this is only a trait of cheap vinyl though. I got hold of some Matt black stuff that doesn't scratch

I found out how to do it. I can get to 4/5 clips without removing the sound deadening and the others are able to be undone with a small flat blade driver through the top.
