Noisy wipers

Featured Replies

The past few months my wipers are making too much noise. They wipe the water very well, which tells me that they are still ok for the job, but they are too loud to ignore. Is there something I can do to stop the noise or should I get myself a new set?

WD40 ? It was suggested here for a noisy alternator belt recently ! ? :-)

Have you used a glass polish or sealant on your windscreen? I did it to mine and every so often they screech, judder and make every noise possible.

Get an alcohol based wipe, or some solution on a paper towel, and rub the wipers down. You'll be amazed at how much crap, presumably ground down dirt and dust, comes off. If nothing else, the wipers will last longer. Obviously, the cleaner you keep your windscreen, the less stuff the wipers will pick up, but it would be an endless task keeping them spotless all of the time.

That's true. I also tried a brand new set of Valeo wipers which are brilliant, they clean perfectly but after just 10 days they started "screaming" during wiping and a knocking sound when wipers are at the top of their way and when they are about to return to their original position.

When this happens I usually use the windscreen function and then all sounds stops. But not lasts for long.

Hmmm now that you mentioned about polish and sealant i think the noise emerged after I started washing the car on my own using foam from the Chemical Guys and a shampoo by Meguiar's. Could those be the reason?

Possibly. You could be leaving a thin layer of wax on the window. A cream cleaner (like Cif) or a proprietory glass cleaning product will strip the glass clean or you may get away with just wiping over with alcohol. Clean the blades as previously described.

I think so. Mine started having these sound issues after I polished my windscreen.

What I would do possibly is to clean your car as per usual with your megs shampoo.. when shampooing the windows give the wiper blades a wipe, then rinse. Go back with some washing up liquid or similar with some kitchen towel and wipe into the windscreen, then rinse again. After drying your car continue to apply glass polish and then sealant. Finally remove all residue from the glass and should be ready to go without any further squeaking, juddering or any other noisy surprises

Fat bloke is cream cleanser like cif not abrasive ?

spray some dense screen wash on the screen

spray some dense screen wash on the screen

Dense? Stupid screen wash or just neat ?

Dense? Stupid screen wash or just neat ?

yeah dense, thick..strong...undiluted...water-less...

I had fitted brand new wipers, they squeaked. I sprayed windscreen wash on the windscreen, it did the trick.

Fabia55 thank u

you're welcome seboni

I've used the jif as well wwwpppssss hope I haven't scratched the windscreen lol

Give good wipe to your wiper blades with IPA (iso propyl alcohol). On the other hand, the windscreen also might need a deep cleaning.

Check the Gtechniq web site for a proper product, e.g. http://gtechniq.com/...on-smart-glass/

I use rainx

Mildly abrasive but nowhere near abrasive enough to scratch glass and the mildly abrasive nature cuts through the grime with little effort. Although keep it off your wipers. Years ago I used to commute through Manchester and after a few months a film built up on the windscreen that I couldn't shift with anything. An old chap saw me struggling and suggested Jif or the equivalent at the time and I was uncertain but tried it as there wasn't the cleaners available that there are today. Perfect job! Used it ever since. I recently bought some halfords screen cleaner and some of their rain X equivalent. The cleaner was just cream cleaner, the same as jif and it did the same job!
