Strange Xenon behaviour, one is never level unless you restart the car

Featured Replies

My car has actually done this for over a year now but I've never got around to fixing the issue!

Basically sometimes when you start the car and turn the lights on they both go down a tad but then the passenger Xenon goes right up and stops there so you end up illuminating everything in sight with the one light.

If you cut the power and restart the car, 9/10 the lights level out and are fine!

I thought they just needed adjusting so a mechanic did all that via Vag-com and said it was all done, as soon as I started the car up again the passenger light went up in the air again so he said he'd have to take another look.

Any ideas what this could be? Is it likely to be a mechanical fault with the headlight (gears or something)? What about the levelling sensors, are they on the rear beam?

I can't really think what else it could be but hopefully someone else has experienced this!

Thanks again

there is a sensor at the front of the suspension check that, also check the rears mine where upside down for some reason.

Nice one, I don't suppose you have a pic? How will I tell if there's something wrong with it?

Did your mechanic scan for fault codes?

A faulty suspension level sensor should produce a fault code.

I hope you haven't been driving around for over a year with one xenon pointing into the air!

You can't adjust the lights using VCDS, you simply put them into 'learning mode' which then allows you to adjust them manually.

1. Put the lights in "learning mode" via VCDS.

2. Adjust the lights manually to correct level.

3. Take the lights out of "learning mode" via vcds.

I'd imagine that if one of the level sensors was faulty then you would have an issue with both headlights and as mentioned above any fault would have been logged and picked up by a scan with VCDS.

Here is a picture of the front passenger side sensor...

I guess it is the Level Sensor inside the Motor unit of the Headlight. When you start the Car, the Lights move and down (dance) before settling down on a level saved earlier in the Memory. I guess there is a loose connection inside the Sensor which makes it fail sense its current position at the first time. Subsequently, the contact gets established and it finds its current position and settles down at the preset position. This could be a reason why only one of the Headlight is facing this problem, because if it was with the Car Level (Suspension) Sensor, both the Lights would act this way. A VCDS scan should hopefully confirm the problem.

Thanks for the advice, but I think it was clear from my post I wasn't stating for one minute I've driven around with one Xenon up in the air for a year....

Quoting myself:

Thanks, that sounds like it's more likely then the car level (suspension) sensor - As you say both lights would be affected...

I'll have to investigate it further this weekend and see what's going on, I was worried it may be a case of a new light and I don't even want to imagine what the cost is....

If it was a level sensor issue I would expect an error in VCDS and both lights to be too high or too low - it would suggest a faulty light to me.

If the system behaves the same as my old 8P A3 if the rear sensor had flipped (easy to do if the car is jacked up) the Xenon's won't go into to basic mode to adjust it gives an error, which is easily sorted by jacking up the rear and flipping the lever on the sensor back the correct way and in range.

Amazing, thanks for that!

£132 is incredibly cheap!!! I'll have a proper look tonight and make sure there's not anything obvious with mine before changing it but for that money I'm tempted to get a pair :-)

Just mind they have no bulbs mate.

Just on 1 occasion out of 10 then?

All of the other useful advice in the same post... don't mention it.

Always a smart-a$$ on a forum isn't there!

My first words were "Thanks for the advice....."

As for the 9/10 times thing perhaps what I should have said to make it 100% clear for the likes of you is that if you then restart it for a 2nd time they always level out....

I hope that meets your need for clarification and satisfies you with regard to my consideration to other road users sir... officer.... or whoever you are

Here is my experience with a 'stuck-looking-up' headlight

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/215890-xenon-headlights-auto-adjustment/page__st__30#entry2618605

[sorry no pics... I did not want to open it up again to take pics]

Turned out that one of the contacts to the lens actuator was making intermittent contact. Maybe the restart shakes it enough to make good contact and so it works on the restart.

Nothing shows up on VAG-COM and the dealer wanted me to replace the whole headlight unit.

If you are so inclined you might want to open it up!
