Traction Control/ESC

Featured Replies

Hi, I am trying to by a Fabia estate with ESC but It appears from the company data that it only comes as standard on the greenline or scout. Neither of which I am interested in. I know if I buy new i can add it as an extra but if I am buying a used fabia does it have any form of traction control at all other than the ESC?

Doesn't it seem like an important thing not to add as standard? Most equivalent brands do. Any advice? Many thanks

I think all new cars have to have this as standard now.

Skoda website says,

"Standard Equipment

ESC incl. ABS, ASR, EDL and HBA (1.2 TSI 105bhp DSG only)"

As above, included new, if u are after used, u need to find a model where someone specified it as an option.... (hard to do)

One model u missed the vRS estate also has it as standard

As the brackets at the end state, only the 1.2 tsi has it as standard.

All cars evidently don't have it as standard as it isn't on most of the other models.

Though the fabia in general doesn't have ESC etc, does anyone know if it has any other (lesser) form of traction control or nothing at all.

The Fabia Mk II either has nothing which is standard for most models or ESP which includes traction control as an option. All auto/dsg have it as standard as does the Scout and vRS.

As a side note, the Mk I did offer traction control as a standalone option, with ESP only available on the vRS, again as an option.

We have ESP on our Monte and it proves it's worth in this weather, even with winter tyres the lightweight petrol Fabia is prone to slide around on ice or compact snow.

I read the brackets part as referring to the HBA part only. Anyway, looking on the website further you can add it as a £370 option or £485 for ESC+

ESC Inc. ABS +ASR+EDL+HBA £370.00

ESC Plus (ESC Inc. TPM and HHC) £485.00

I read somewhere that from 2013 all new cars produced in the eu have to have ESC as standard.

Hi, Thanks for replies. The traction control is an essential element to me and the fact it isn't on most models as standard has all but eliminated the used car market in my search for a fabia estate. So my choice is either a new fabia with it as optional extra or a used scout.

A Skoda salesman told me also that traction control is to become a requirement. So why aren't they getting ahead of the game and sticking it on all of them now? Surely if you buy a typical fabia now it will be obsolete in two years by road standard.

How does this work then? I am paying extra for ESC on my Monte Carlo. If it's now EU law then why should I fork out £300 for it?

If they have to add ESC as standard they'll only put the price onto the list price of the car. Nothing is for free.

It isn't EU law yet. Just the general consensus that it will be very soon.

Yes they will add it to the price but still, something as important as this shouldn't be an optional extra. When it is law and everyone has it in a few years time all the cars on the used market without it will look very unappealing.

Hi just had a look at AA web site.

So its not 2013 its 2014. My mistake. Must give them time to introduce as standard ESC throughout the year

These days the emphasis in vehicle safety development is on electronic systems that can help prevent an accident happening rather than on measures to reduce the severity of injuries when one does occur. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was one of the first, and most effective, and will have to be fitted as standard on all new cars from 2014.

All of these mean the same thing:

  • ESP Electronic Stability Programme
  • ESC Electronic Stability Control
  • VDC Vehicle Dynamic Control
  • DSC Dynamic Stability Control
  • VSA Vehicle Stability Assist
  • ASC Active Stability Control
  • DSTC Dynamic Stability and Traction Control

How does this work then? I am paying extra for ESC on my Monte Carlo. If it's now EU law then why should I fork out £300 for it?

Cannot foresee ESP becoming standard on the Fabia II in it's remaining production life :wonder: However all the new models being introduced do, bar the base model citigo. For whatever reason Skoda have not prioritized this life saving technology over say fancy alloys or stereos, despite being available to them for many years and it's only now with pending legislation that their hand is being forced to make it standard across the range.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a new Fabia Hatch 1.2 105 TSI with DSG but as I read the current brochure it seems that ESP is only an extra cost option on this model. The older brochures did say it was standard on the 1.2 DSG TSI 105. My car was built in January - week 2 of 2013.

Does anyone know if it has ESP or how do I tell from the delivery literature if it has or not? Forgot to ask the dealer but I reckon it is important. Many thanks to all helpful commentators here.

Look for a traction contol switch above the heated rear screen switch, if it's there you have ESP.

...Or just buy a new or second-hand vRS estate, job done... (though not a fan of the estate's look but that's another story).

It is also standard on the Fabia Scout already.

Yes but it is too slow, lol.

I'm probably getting confused but isn't traction control just one component of proper ESP? According to the official Skoda site you have to pay extra foe ESP even on Elegance models.

You can have ASR (traction control) as a stand alone without ESP and some Yeti's and Octavia's do have just the ASR funtion, however on the Fabia II this is not an option, you either have nothing or ESP with ASR, hence looking for the switch on the dash.

The 1.2TSi DSG has ESP as it comes on the same ABS unit as HHC and also allows the option of the TPM. AFAIK the 7sp DSG always comes with HHC.

I got the switch. Many thanks for the info.

A switch? So its manually operated? I thought esc/esp was something the car automatically went into when it felt itself skid (my old mazda does this)

Of course it's not "manually operated". ESP is always and by default on and will engage every time it has to.

The button on the dash does not turn off the entire ESP but only the ASR sub-system which cuts power when a wheel is spinning. This is meant for situations when you're stuck and actually need a little "slipping" in order to find some traction and get going (once I had to de-activate it to get out of an icey parking lot as the wheels were immediately spinning from 900 rpm and on. But even with ASR off the rest of the systems are always on.

So the button doesn't actually mean that you turn the entire system on and off at will, but by seeing a button up there, you know you have ESP.

They won't fit it to "cheaper" models already, as we shouldn't be driving them like lunatics, rather like the Granny's shopping trolley that they are.

So alloys are better to sell than ESC etc. Until recently, when it became the latest big thing to have.

I've never been in a situation to need it, but I have used ABS. DOes that mean it isn't important? nope, I just wouldn't get too upset if my new car didn't have it or select a car because it did (and for no other reason).

And too many TLAs in this thread now. IMO. LOL.
