Interesting 106 steering wheel issue

Featured Replies

Thought I'd put this up here as the rules on 106owners seem intent on not allowing me to post about steering wheels....

Short version - current airbagless wheel = very manky, so picked one up cheap that looks smart - oem, but it does have an airbag - so it will just sit there and look pretty, Fits on spline fine but it appears to be missing the lug to cancel the indicators whilst turning. Its almost like there is a deliberate gap in the new wheel where this lug would fit in?

Old wheel - nice lug as part of the integral framework of the wheel

New wheel (fitted) = gap.... Very tempted to find something to glue in to perform the job of the lug....

It is something common on BMW's and cars used as Taxi's or Private hire Cars.

The drivers of those vehicles cope with the lack of Self Canceling Indicators by never indicating.

Jason, are you complaining about PSA adding lightness by not fitting a "turn the indicators off at the wrong time several times a day and occasionally not turn them off when it should" device?

I am curious how the hell the car this wheel WAS in cancelled the indicators.... You can even see the end of the indicator through the gap in the last pic. I just need to glue something in I think that will stick out the back and hit that lever as the wheel is turned. I am thinking of superglue, and something plastic. Hmmmmm. :D

Would glue hold it? Could you bolt/weld something in to be a bit stronger?

+1 a small shim of ally or steel, .5mm drill bit and two self tappers to attach it, better than glueing.

Iirc it is on the airbag on the cars whic have them fitted. I think the contact is made there.

Bloody hell - I never though to check the back of the airbag, but I'm sure there isn't a big lug sticking out that would go in that hole. I might be wrong.

In fact sod it, I'm so intrigued I'm going out in this crappy weather in my tennis shorts to have a look! LOL

Well, that was pleasant - unfortunately nothing on the back of the airbag. With the way it sits in the wheel, the lug would have to be very deep, almost three times as long as the lug on the picture above.

I'll find something to shove in the hole. The wheel is all plastic/rubber around the small gap so I was thinking as long as I find something the right size for a tight fit in the gap, glue will hold in long term.

The airbag doesnt/wont have anything on the back to cancel the indictors, it was done by the small plastic "squib" that fits between the wheel and the splined shaft.

Woop! I think you've found the issue. I don't have a squib because I don't have any airbag wiring inside my car. I'm going to have to hunt down that part and use fit the plastic round bit. :)

Im still not 100% it would fit or work either. If i remember rightly it has a different set up in terms of the indicator stalks aswell to accomodate the small plastic "fingers" on the rear of the squib. The squib is also spring loaded to stay central (at 12pm like on a clock) to "tell" the indicators when its time to cancel with the position of the wheel. I "think" the squib also slots into the rear of the steering wheel aswell.

Yes - and that bit of the squib must go through the hole in the wheel I see, and do the job of the lug on the back of the airbagless wheel (because there is no squib)

I'm still just tempted to knock something up to just wedge in that hole to knock that piece of the indicator end. That's all the lug did on the back of the original wheel - once every full turn only.

Ahh that's the bugger. I knew I'd seen it sat there on a 306 with the airbag. So while it's not part of the airbag itself, it's part of the airbag gubbins :)

Good find.

Jason, would it just be cheaper to get a momo wheel :p

Momo wheel? Might cost me the same I paid for the whole car! :D

I've found someone who can post me a squib for £8, so going to follow up on that. I had a little play this morning watching what the lever you can see through the hole does as the wheel turns and indicator goes on and off, so think it should work fine once the squib is in. :)

Hope it does mate, i thought the indicator set up might be different but hopefully not. Good luck with it!

Yeah, if the squib turns out not to have the reach or something, than I will need to look into it further.

its quite interesting how the indicator works as you can see it in the pic above with half sticking out across the hole. When either indicator is on, its come out to the right about 1cm, and is "floppy" if that makes sense - I was able to stick a small screwdriver in the hole and cancel it by flicking the lever up and down. Quite a simple but effective way of it working I guess. :)

Once that's sorted I'll bolt the airbag in and all done. I just need to mention when selling although it has an airbag'd wheel, its not an airbag'd car. I can see it confusing someone at MOT time next.

Well, went out tonight to see what kind of temp fix I could come up with....

In the end I found a 3" long bolt, chunky thing, and armed with insulation tape to pack out, managed to wedge the bolt in the hole to the point where it felt secure and was doing the necessary cancelling the indicators.

This was fine, but when I went out for a drive I found at certain points of the steering wheel position, I actually couldn't put the indicator on, like it was being blocked by the offending bolt....

I've bolted the airbag in and shall test it for a couple of days. I have a feeling I am just going to have to look for an airbagless wheel on Ebay.... with the lug on it like my old manky one.
