Running a worn tyre with a new tyre?

Featured Replies

Recently damaged the side wall on a front tyre and tyre shop say it's better if I don't use it.

Im tempted to swop the damaged Michelin Pro Sport 3 with the Continental Sport 2 that is on the steel spare.

I would then be running a Michelin Pro Sport 3 with about 3.5mm alongside a Continental Sport 2 with 8mm tread.

Would that be okay?

Any thoughts appreciated.

No-one will advise you doing that. Cheapest way is probably buy another conti sport 2, keep the Michelin as the spare and throw the damaged one away.

Yep, if it fits, put the other good one on your spare (how old is that tyre?) and buy a matching one.

Using a slightly damaged tyre as a spare or running tyres with different tread depths on the front?

I wouldn't personally use mis matched tyres on the same axle, but then I apply that to the Skoda, yet the 106 has different brands and depths on each corner it seems....

What's on the left should match what's on the right, this is especially true on the driven wheels as in this case they are responsible for starting, steering and stopping.

While it's not unheard of to run mixed on the rear the latest guidance is new tyres are always put to the rear and older tyres moved to the front as a rear end slide is potentially more serious.

If it were me I'd buy a 2nd Conti and put it and the Conti from the spare on the rear and use the good PS3 as a spare. You pay an extra tyre fitting charge but only have to pay for one new tyre. Oh and the tyre shop is right, sidewall damage is dangerous.
