Catalytic converters, pre '01 cars only?

Featured Replies

I just bought a centre exhaust box from one of the on-line discount parts places and noticed 3 different cats listed for the 1.9 diesel Felicia. One is over £100 but the other 2 are less than £70, one is only £57.54 but these two are both marked as "Illegal to Supply for Vehicles Registered on or after 01/03/01"

Are they just empty or something? Would they still get a diesel Felicia through the MOT?

They are all made by React so the price difference isn't because of different brands.

(My car's a '97 estate.)

Diesels don't require a cat for the MOT.

There you go then. Will a cheap, possibly empty one make any difference to how it runs or the emissions?

It will increase the emissions but not effect the emissions part of the mot since they arent measured

You will be damaging the planet more so expect some sleepless nights ;)

It will help the performance slightly and might be a little louder but not much

I wonder. On a good run it averages around 52mpg so.... if it flows better I'd get better MPG so I'd use less fuel and be better for the planet...?

It's not a cat its a soot filter really but everyone calls em cats ..

they need to have a different type approval or E mark to be sold now due to tightening up on the cheap aftermarket cats, you would be better off getting someone to weld a straight pipe where your old cat was is fairness you will notice better mpg and better throttle response.

diesels do not need a cat for mot as long as it passes the measured smoke test which it will as long as you give it a good thrash on the way to the test station.

The one on there is a cheap aftermarket one anyway and a rubbish fit. There's no sideways offset from the manifold and the tail comes straight out instead of being at a slight angle like the some others I've seen so it's always been close to the subframe at the front and with the new centre box in it now sometimes chatters against it on one side. I'm going to have a go at bending it but if I can't it sounds like I should look at a straight pipe or another cheap "cat" of a better shape.
