What's this, why is it gaffer taped and is that a problem?

Featured Replies

In the interests of neatness, I will probably replace, but what is it and is there an upgraded/performance version if I do. Looks like some sort of air intake...

Looks like the air intake trumpet was / is having connection issues to the pipe which presumably goes to the airbox?

thanks, what's it called? an ebay search for skoda air trumpet, or air intake doesn't seem to find one....

I seem to remember a thread with someone fitting a carbon fiber one that looked nice.

Not sure of the official name to be honest

Shouldn't be a problem as there is no pressure there and its only incoming air, not outgoing, so no real need to be sealed 100%. Someone before obviously just wanted to keep the two bits together better.

good excuse to whip it out and replace with a cold air enclosed induction system like a pipercross viper i fitted to mine.

Although you probably will want a pipe that connects to the oem intake rather than use the folglight position like i did

below. (Made a big improvement over standard airbox though)

so if it goes to the oem box, I will still need to find the name of that bit to replace. I guess if it uses the oem intake, any benefits are lost too....

Gaffer tape win... If you can find zip ties in there as well then it's an epic repair win. The repair of champions.

They are a site sponsor i think.

Use nail varnish remover to get silicon sealant off.

That's a 9.5/10 in my book. 10/10 would have needed a cable tie for the final bit of security.

peel off the tape, some of those intakes had an air opening there, some didnt, previous owner prob taped it to cover the hole looking for an increase in performance

I can see the plastic bracket is snapped, for a fiver and to stop more tape getting into the cooling fan and radiator, I will get a new one.

thanks all, didn't think gaffer tape and sealer was OEM....

Glad the link was usefull but i still think your missing a trick and should go for a closed induction system ;-) why go back to standard,

if its a change make sure its for the better.

Couldn't find one on ebay a few weeks back when I wanted to replace mine (also broke, also gaffer taped!). Even tried emailing sellers who were breaking vehicles with no joy.

On the plus side brand new genuine replacement parts are pretty cheap it turns out.

Decided to replace mine with a carbon fibre one in the end which looks great.

Any links to what I would need. Not megabucks and easy to fit. I see there is a big area behind the bumper and before the rad. Would that be a good place to mount it. Lots of cold air there

One thing I would suggest is you site the intake so there's no possibility of getting water sucked into your intake. There were problems with renaults putting the intake down by the front wheel arch somewhere and with water subsequently getting sucked up when they went through deep puddles etc. This resulted in some serious damage to the engine as the water wouldn't compress like the air & petrol mixture.

cheers

The picture above is on my renault cliosport and the Intake is in the fog light position about as low as you can get never had any problems with water ingress. I think its more likely to pop the jubilee clip off the manifold end than suck that volume of water the full length of the intake and though the filter medium and into the engine. I went through a ford (stream) in it a couple of times that was above the intake so it must have just sucked air in down the side of the pipe for a split second as the pipes are effectively a coil so no matter how much tension you apply with the jubillee clips there is always a small airgap and it will take the path of least resistance. Having said all that it would pay to put the intake a bit higher just to be on the safe side. I wouldn't recomend putting it where i had it but that was the only place i could get it apart from the wheel arch but then you lose out on the forced /ram air venturi effect so not ideal.

I suppose you could have two Elastoplasts and a bit of Pritt Stick..........................
