ive had a quick search and couldnt find anything similar ....

But today on my way home driving down the a1m my car beeped and showed the outside temperature at 4'c it then continued to drop over around 2 miles and dropped down to -22'c.

what could cause this?

Are there any other problems related to this besides over use of glowplugs?

We're you anywhere near the North Pole when this occurred? ;-)

Possible lump of ice sat over the probe????

Unless the ice was -22 I wouldn't have thought so.

Faulty outside temp sensor, may have been damaged with salty roads and piles of snow hitting it leaving it to be sitting In a pool of water basically.

thats what i was thinking after checking the car hadnt been bumped whilst parked .... will have to see how it goes ....

I noticed a big drop in mine the other evening when I hit some standing water in the dark.

the temp sensor is attached to the bumper behind the passenger front fog surround you will see a small rectangular slit in the fog surround the sensor will be sat behind it. personally i would swap out the sensor and see if that fixes it. I doubt that the glow plug circuit is connected.

My Golf (PD150) did this.

New sensor from a scrappy fixed it for less than a tenner. I only changed it as the constant beeping was annoying!

the sensors worked fine since and the 2 systems are connected ... the length of time the glow plugs run depends on the outside temperature .... or so it says in the manual ...

Yes - the length of time the glowplugs are on will be dictated by internal (to the engine) temperature or outside temperature. However I'd very much doubt that the temperature measured by the sensor in the bumper is the one which is used for the glowplugs. After not all diesels have an external temperature display. I think it's pretty likely that the glowplugs use their "own" sensor completely separately - but it would be useful if someone could verify this assumption.

Checking other topics it looks like the glowplug timing is controlled by the coolant temperature sensor.
