Plans for electric car charging points across Scotland.

Featured Replies

How many electric cars are there in Durness? Seriously, that's about the only place I can think of that's definitely more than 50 road miles from every Trunk road.

Durness is right on a trunk road.

I have no problem with the installation of charging points,

i just await what the plan is for larger grants towards the purchase of Electric Cars in Scotland.

I am keen to know the range of Electric cars in winter in the highlands, and the charge time to continue a journey

i did 600 miles around the west coast this weekend, on the likes of the wonderful European Funded road to Mallaig.

Only cars that i spotted that really were a danger with no lights on outside towns were 2 Renault Wind,

a black one on the Rest & be Thankful, in a total downpour. then i thought it was the same car at Fort Augustus,

but it happened to just be a similar one unlit in almost zero visibility.

(no idea if people in cars driving for economy think keeping lights off saves fuel, but risk their and others lives to be Green.

i hope that Electric car drivers would not go lightless to save battery power,

enough white hybrids about already doing 56 mph and not 1 mph more.)

Ah, I didn't think there was a Trunk along the North coast, or up the West past Ullapool.

The last I heard the charge time for anything other than a battery-killing "fast charge" that only gives 80% of complete anyway was still "several hours", and the range from 100% was "not enough to do Glasgow - Oban without recharging (which is even more of an issue if you're just off a ferry and want to get to Glasgow with your car the same day, and will remain so until there are recharge points on ferries. Of course, that really will prove that electric cars are so much greenwash).

If the Units for kwh are cheap enough i will be running lots off my Free Installation car charging point,

i pay lots already to SSE for what i use in the house, but which gets produced cheaply enough..

That's ok... drive for your 50 mile range to get to one, then wait 6 hours to fully charge, then carry on.

I'm assuming they are three phase and going to do higher rate charging, but that's still going to be a fair while.

Electric cars are for city driving or short commutes anything else they just suck at.

Totally pointless as it will be fuel cell cars in the long term or bio fuels.

Doesnt matter if your never more than 5 miles from a charging station as it will still take several hours to charge. Even if it only took 30 minutes, which it never will, it is still far too long considering you will need to have another charging break 150 miles later.

Actually i was wrong with my first response.......

Electric cars work very well on the golf course also.

What I was thinking. Are they putting hotels next to the points?

I can see where Keith Brown MSP is coming for with driving to work and parking up,

or parking at the train station & getting wired in.

(lets see where there are all these train stations and parking places)

But it is Scotland we are talking about here, so the cables will be pinched, or just the car batteries.

Lets see if the MSP's can all travel by Electric Powered Vehicles paid for with their own cash money and not on MSP travel expenses,

then we might get an idea on just how viable it all is.

Isn't "driving in central Edinburgh if you don't have to" a strong indication of insanity?

It's the definition of insanity.

Although I'm sure the MSPs will arrange some sort of Zil lane in this eventuality.

I wonder if we'll start to see 3 phase iPhone chargers when these point appear.

O/T but doesn't the iPhone5 really need a permanent mains connection?

Its so not going to take off is it, 8 hours charging 50-100 miles of driving. We need little nuclear plants under the bonnet, or boot maybe would be better.

Maybe it really is that simple. Effectively bio fuel.

The flying bit is unlikely but a blender...........

Or "go back" to Flintstone-style cars, tackling both the limited resource of fossil fuels and obesity/unfitness in the population.
