Vegetable oil conversion... big decision

Featured Replies

Ok I've got the opportunity to get my fabia vrs (05) a conversion kit (abvout 850euros worth) for free (work are gonna pay)

1) Will it work with the 130pd engine

2) Any known problems

3) Would you do it????

The current VAG diesel engines will all run on biodiesel.

It's something I'd contemplate, but the trouble is that once the duty on the fuel has been paid it usually doesn't work out much cheaper...

Rob.

Personally I wouldn't bother as I think it may harm resale values. As Rob says, the PD unit will run quite happily on a bio-diesel blend, but the fuel filter will need changing more frequently if you do :D

And it will reduce power, or so I've been told.

And give the car an interesting aroma ;)

ok, well the kit is about 800 euros and includes a second tank (so no mixing in the derv tank)

also would you go for pure oil or a oil/derv mix or oil/thinner?

In Starsky and Hutch style DO IT, DO IT, GO ON DO IT !!!!

Seriously if they are giving it to you for free there is nothing to lose - a few years a go i did a home conversion of a Pug 205 1.9D with a mate of mine to run on SVO (straight vegetable oil) the car ran like a dream, the engine idled and ran smoother than on normal DERV the changing in engine note (quieter) was instantly recognisable. There was, not no loss of power what-so-ever. and you can drive around safe in the knowledge that you are doing you

Wow cheers for that, the site doing the kits is www.elsbett.com

Its becasue my boss wants to do it to his passat estate and i think he's scared he'll wreck it so wants me to do it first.... and i do lots of miles

Well - I know its cheap.

"someone" who will remain anonymous for obvious reasons, runs his Isuzu Trooper on filtered used vegetable oil. 25p a litre too, and economy is unaffected, but I guess he'll need more fuel filters which are cheap enough.

Never been tempted to use it in mine, especially with the cost of fuel filters for my car!

we sell vegetable oil at work for 34p a litre.........

have several people who regularly come in once a month or so and stock up!!!!

WTF? Isnt this illegal? Are your on about running your car on vegtable oil instead diesel?

I thought it was one of the things the Police check when they do spot checks on vehicles?

Am I just being a complete numpty?

no thats red diesel, or VAT Free stuff, used by farmers etc etc....

Ahhhh I am mixing the two up

Thanks

My only problem with it is how to get a good supply going, how filtered is it (post-initial usage), is it more smokey (sp) that kinda thing :)

They do not have to do much spot checking just follow their noses!

lol - an excellent idea, use stuff from a chip shop just needs a bit more filtering and the water extracting from it - then you can run around on it all day long.... with that glorious smell following you around everywhere you go :D

Good luck with it - let us all know how it goes

My Octy has a sticker on the fuel filler cap saying "not for biodiesel". I wonder if there is some reason you can't use it on the 2 litre diesel? Guess I'd better leave the veggie oil in the kitchen...

Carblack, thats a very interesting post!!!! Is that sticker on the inside of the filler cap.

I also want to check with my dealer to see if it'll affect warranty at all :S
