welding question

Featured Replies

Hi, I know its not a welding forum, but I bet sombody can answer my question, thanks in advance. I have an entry level MIG welder from Machine mart, so aint the most advanced set available and has limited adjustment. I have always used 0.8mm wleding wire whcih welds thicker steel well. It often burns through on bodywork thickness steel though, which is well annoying! If I were to change to 0.6mm welding wire, would this mak much differenc when welding thinner section? Would I notice much difference?

Yes always use 0.6mm wire on car panels, burning holes through cars with the mig torch is a favourite pastime of mine.

Yes, thinner wire requires less power to melt it, meaning less chance of blowing holes everywhere.

Yeah, it's a combination of that and technique. Practice on thinner stuff on the bench, and modulate the amount of heat you're putting into the panel by changing the duty cycle (i.e. pausing between smaller welds rather than doing it all continuously). Limited adjustment of current is a problem though, for sure.

Thanks heaps people. I can now blame my rubbish welding on my tools! I just wish I'd known this 12 years ago.
