Was there much body corrosion?

 

Yes, there was some corrosion, mostly on the sills, rear wheel arches and on the front wings. All the rusty parts were replaced, new parts were installed and the car was entirely resprayed. We even reproduced the green pinstripping with the 135 RiC labelling on the wings.

The Meteor II alloys were also refurbished and new caps were put on (thanks to Chris from eBay).

She's still equipped with the original Philips car stereo and the log book is showing that the car was well serviced at Skoda showroom's garage until I bought it.

Nice video. Your wheels look lovely. The standard stereo is rubbish isn't it? I have no intentions of modifying mine but I do find the Phillips hard to live with. Do you have the graphics needed to have the RiC pinstripping reproduced?

Yeah, it's quite a dated stereo set but considering that it's already a 20+ years old technique it's still a fair item in the car. Of course if you're using the Rapid daily, then a new stereo is a must (but keep the retro as well for future projects).

 

Unfortunately I don't have the graphics, I've had the pinstripping made by a local decor shop while the car was still under restoration.

Does your Walbro fuel pump work fine? How about the other specific GLi parts?

 

Yes, fuel pump seems to work just OK at the moment atleast. I haven't really had need for Gli specific parts yet. I have another 135Gli fully stripped for spare parts so I have basically one whole car for spare parts. I saved it from some old guy who was going to take it to the scrapyard! :p Planning to color the grey floor mats from the spare car black and stick them in my Gli with black/yellow leather seats. Hopefully next winter.

 

Still lots of work to do with this thing. Trying to figure out what springs I should use in front and rear to get it little stiffer than it is now. Also planning to fit side skirts and dump my 235/45R13 tyres in it. Will see how it turns out. Still on the edge of getting the "skoda custom made" widebody kit stuff or just find some MK2 Escort side skirts and modify them to fit with the 130LR rear spoiler. Hard choices...

I work in the parts business and I have a distinct memory that I've come across this car before, probably by a previous owner because it was some years ago. Apparently, Finland got a batch of Skodas originally destined for Canada or something? They had better spec than our normal Skodas, including fuel injection and a catalytic converter.

 

Fuel injection was a premium option here until new emissions regulations finally made the catalytic converter mandatory in 1990. Fuel injection wasn't unheard of in the 1980s either, but it was certainly not something a Skoda buyer would pay extra for.

 

Did you follow the owner home to ask him about it?

Perc, that one is a normal Rapid 130 and it has nothing to do with a 135GLi except the rear badge which I guess was put on the tail wing by the owner.

Yep, Finland got a batch of Canadian export 135GLis in 1989.

Yeah, I pulled the plate info and it comes up as COUPE-12000G/2400 from 1983, 1280cc engine. A ricer-badged Rapid, imagine that.

I'm certain I've talked to the owner of a fuel injected Rapid at some point many years ago and it was even the same color. Couldn't have been this car then

Finally my RiC is up and running again after a massive cleaning process of the Walbro fuel pump. 

It was full of rust, so no wonder it didn't work.

Now I need to concentrate on the fixing of the heater motor and to find out why the petrol gauge doesn't work...

Hi all, I have been a reader here for a while but only just joined after Googling and finding that my car has been mentioned. I bought my Rapid 135 RiC J419 KOS in March this year and as yet have not MOT'd or taxed but will be on the road come the Spring. I will get some pictures up soon.

It was soaked in petrol for a while, then 12V was given to it directly for both directions, so finally it started to operate.

But now I have an other issue to solve...

The engine won't start, so I need to replace the temperature sensors (the 2 from Renault, 7700737571 and 7700737572)...

Are they easy to get hold of?

You mean the sensors?

If so, then yes, they're easy to get hold of. Just visit your local Renault dealer and they'll order them for you.
