We all use them...including me, but do we always know what they mean. Here's some that I'm not sure of...does anyone have the low-down on them all?

TDI, CR (As in TDI `CR`), DSG, TSI, TFSI, S (As in Superb `S`), SE (As in Superb `SE`), PS (As in 160`PS`) and MP3 (As in `MP3` player).

Many thanks.

Mike.

of the top of my head -

Turbo diesel injection - TDi

Common Rail - CR

Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection -TFSI

Special Edition - SE

Pferdestärke - PS (german equivalent to BHP, and yes I had to look up how to spell it!)

TLA (three letter acronym)

FMIC = Front mounted inter cooler

BFOFMIC = Large Front mounted intercooler

JMTPW HTH BTW

Thank you...so just 5 to go... `DSG`, `TSI`, `S` and `MP3`.

TSi - same as TFSI, just no 'F'

Think 'S' can mean either Special or Sport. Depends on manufacturer and type of car it it applied to.

DSG = Direct Shift Gearbox

MP3 = MPEG-1 (or 2) Audio Layer 3

Thanks all. Getting there. Just `DSG` and `MP3` to go.

TDI = Turbocharged Direct Injection in VAG

IIRC didn't there used to be a thread somewhere with lots of acronyms explained including ones like SWMBO and IMHO as well as technical car related ones?

S isn't Special or Sport. As a model in the Superb range it just means basic as it's low spec.

Skoda models tend to go E, S, SE, Elegance, L&K. With various add ons outdide the regular structure like Sport, VRS, Scout etc...

Of course, not all car models have all of them. E is bargain basement so I don't think there is a Superb E.

VAG = Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft not Volkswaken Audi Group. Audi has it's own title; Audi AG or Audi Aktiengesellschaft. Just thought I'd set that one straight :p

Ok, but it must have a meaning...if it really did mean `Basic`, wouldn't it be `B`? You're right, there is no Superb E.

the trouble with having something labelled as 'B' would in my opinion make it seem low, ie not A as in 'first rate'. 'S' is far more ambiguous and open to interpretation, if you follow me! I remember my MIL (mother in law) commenting on the Mercedes B class when that came out; 'oh, it's not A class it's B class but it's better than the A class!

I agree, labelling a car 'S' is vague enough to not put people off, it doesn't look base spec - the base model wouldn't even have a letter after it's name kind of thing

DSG: Direkt Schalt Getriebe (so it was originally meant by the Germans :giggle: )

But Direct Shift Gearbox is a one to one translation of it.

And the predecessor of the VAG tdi engines was the PD, means pumpe düse. Pump injektor as it is activated by the camshaft.

The first TSI were Twincharged Stratified Injection (the smaller engines with supercharger and turbo). But as VAG is randomly using TFSI and TSI it doesnt point to a certain kind of engine anymore.

TFSI is also used by Audi for their 3.0 supercharged engine (S4 and likes)
