Anyone got a tuned 4x4?

Featured Replies

Hey,

Has anyone got a 1.8T 4x4 Elegance, that they have remapped etc. Lowered, stiffened?

I'm interested to know what they are like with vrs+ horsepower and pernament four wheel drive.

Thanks a lot!

I have. It's good, much better than my remapped Golf 1.8T I had previously.

BTW 4wd isn't permanent but is permanently available, sounds similar but is different.

If you have specific questions I'll try to help but not quite sure what to say.

yep same here, both me and eddy are running *slightly* more than stock vRS power. I love it too :)

the 4x4 as said above isn't permanent but always available. it reacts in a tenth of a second or so which is pretty good really as it gives you pretty much FWD economy and drivability day to day but 4x4 when things get slippery. where are you?? i know i'd be more than happy to show what its like and i'm sure others would be willing to meet ya :)

I'm near Gatwick. You can turn it into pernament four wheel drive, if you hit the ESP switch. You loose the stability programm but you get full 4wd. Which I like.

It's only that we took delivery of our first 4x4 2.0FSi today and it was pouring down so I flicked the switch and tried to make it wheelspin.. It didn't it just went!

I've never driven a chipped 1.8T 4x4 though!

It can never be permanent 4wd due to the way the haldex works the prop needs to be spinning a certain amount before there is enough pressure for the haldex clutch to engage.

It's not 4x4 from standstill but as soon as your moving it is 4x4 if you have the esp system turned off isn't it?

Only if the system detects slip, otherwise it's fwd.

Oh. I was convinced that disabling the ESP system, puts it into constanst 4x4 mode.

I'm probably wrong, you guys are the experts!

How fast is it through bends etc? Better than the vrs?

probably the same once given better suspension etc in the dry, maybe a little better in the wet. the thing is you can really put the power down exiting the corner

Main difference will be felt due to the 4x4 having independent rear suspension whereas the vRS has a fixed beam. However on the new Octavia all models including the fwd have independent rear suspension.

However as Bengie says there's not much in it once modded but with the 4x4 you can probably get on the power a little earlier.

New 4x4 getting some rave reviews in all the publications. There was mention of a 'second generation' haldex system. Is something new about it then? Is it just an updated version of the previous one?

New haldex has Pre-X, this predicts slip rather than waits for it to happen by monitoring throttle action etc.. The haldex ECU available from EIP works in a similar way.

My preference for the 4x4 mainly came from hating TC, and having less understeer out of corners. (Understeer into corners is about the same as with the vRS.)

The independent rear suspension counted for something too.

The stealth look was an added bonus - although I can see why to others that would be an insurmountable obstacle instead. :D

Also, the 4x4 turbo was actually cheaper here than the vRS, and I used up the price gap to lower it and stiffen it up, give it the same sports interior, and hike the power to above standard vRS level.

I understand that in the UK it was the other way around, which would have made my move a bit less logical.

What kind of prices are you looking at to a) sort out the suspension (bring it in line with the vRS) and B) to tune/chpi the engine, to say 180-190Bhp kind of range?

Nice Guy Mike

What's involved with the suspension change? New Springs and Dampers? What kind of price for those?

Nice Guy Mike

i fitted KW V2 that i bought from another member, they are new springs and dampers that are adjustable.

makes for a much more composed ride round corners and much less body roll

Does the standard fwd have independant rear suspension as i thought the beam was only on the VRS?

Nope, all FWDs have the torsion-beam rear suspension. The independent suspension is only on the 4x4.
