Think my alarm horn has died..

Featured Replies

I had a fellow brisky member turn on my alarm beep on (locking/unlocking) which worked fine for ages but then when i got my cruise control retro fitted it stopped for a while, say about 3 months then it started working on day out the blue but now has given up the ghost again.

Im not electronically minded so could this be a faulty siren or wiring?

Id say check the wireing to the horn. Try setting the alarm of intenialy see if it sounds then. If it does could be a coding conflict.

Its a common fault, it will be the siren. Its located in the inner wing on the drivers side,

If chirps on locking are set and car is around 5/6 years then new alarm horn/battery unit is needed, about £40.

Will it give me a definite answer on Vagcom?

Yes, I think a failed alarm horn produces a fault code on VCDS.

I'd put my money on that too.....the book says they only have a 6 year lifespan.

unlock the car using the door lock, open the door and wait

if the indicators start flashing and no siren the horn is no good

I had to change it on my old golf, the horn died but the chirp still worked

They have an internal battery which is only suppost to be good for 5 years.

Same happened to my mk1 fabia just got on on eBay and swapped over

Read in the car manual that they should be changed at 6 years

Right ok, sorry did someone mention the location of the battery?

The alarm horn battery is an integral part of the horn and can't be replaced. You've got to replace the whole horn.

A few guys on VW forums have tried to replace the internal battery, but usually find the internal circuitry of the horn to be in bad/corroded condition and end up replacing the whole horn.

I can definitely confirm that you should see an error on VCDS - and yes, you will need to replace the entire unit.

It is easy enough to do - take the drivers side wheel off, get the panel off, it's up in the wheel arch.

My 2010 VRs had to have the horn replaced under warranty as it wouldn't chirp when triggered. The door LED would also do some strange things too.

My alarm horn just got replaced under warranty, car is 20 months old! The new one chirps noticeably louder and a slightly different tone..... I actually preferred the way the old one chirped, but I wasn't going to refuse a brand spanky new one under warranty now was I??

Has anybody found a cheaper supplier for the alarm? Mine has stopped working and Rainworth quoted £114. This is a bit steep for what is basically a flat battery.

I bought a used one from ebay, but you won't know how long it will last

Mine operates fine as an alarm but emits a barely audible chirp on locking. I will get it checked on the next service before the warranty expires.

P.S. A VCDS scan shows no faults.

You can turn it on and off (I think) using the stream head unit. In the settings there is an option for "Beep On/Off". Have you turned it off by accident ?

See i mentioned this the first time the beep stopped working (it was under a used car warranty by Skoda) but they wanted £45 to scan it with Vagcom first, i offered a very recent print out of vagcom from a friend but they wanted to do their own...
