Car judders when Turbo kicks in

Featured Replies

Only this morning im driving to work and when putting my foot down instead of power, i get alot of judder and lack of power....no smoke out the back althought i do have an engine management light on for 2 years now due to my EGR valve being blocked with crap.

So im guessing a hose has popped off or something? Checked under the bonnet and they all seem ok...havent seen the bottom intercooler pipe yet, might have to wait till another day,

any one got any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try scanning the car with VCDS

The problem you have is that the eml is a quite general light, normally when it comes on you would read the codes and find out why, as you've had yours on for so long you don't know when anything else may have caused it to illuminate as you've just assumed it's still just the EGR issue. On the previous services did they tell you what codes were on logged? Personally I'd suggest buying a generic lead and downloading a copy of vcds lite and while you're at it clean the EGR.

ok if we were to assume that there was no engine managment light on what would be the cause of turbo and loss of power?

Could be a few things. leaking boost pipes, blocked or leaky EGR, dodgy maf sensor and possibly more. Easier to scan tbh

ok thanks. So vcds lite is freely available and then i just need some form of obd2 to usb cable?

I believe so yes. Haven't got vcds lite myself.

ordered a cable off ebay and got the vcds lite software. Now just have to wait....if there are any other ideas in the mean time...and things to do and not to do, that would be helpful. Car drives fine, as long as i dont put my foot down.

DMF shudder

I thought it might be that, but its come on very sudden if it is...the car is never thrashed and it seems to be only turbo spool.....so im hoping its not DMF judder and simply a loose boost pipe or something similar... :S

Just took the car out again, and 1st 2nd and third gear pulls fine and turbo kicks in fine too, seemed to just be on the motoway in 5th and 6th gears this morning....does this still sound DMF related?

Used to happen to mine when boost came in 4th gear onwards.

Changed the clutch and DMF now no more judder ;)

poo :( will it through a fault code if it is infact the DMF? How much was the total cost of replacement for your clutch and DMF?

If replacing with standard parts it shouldnt be tooooo costly. Its the labour that costs as its a biggish job.

i always drop a gear when accelerating on the bypass/motorway to stop this, when the turbo kicks in the DMF struggles to put the power to the engine at low revs hence it struggles, hence the shudder!

hmm ok, so this is something i can get away with for a while then and not something i immediatley have to fork out for to fix? Ill see what happens tonight on the motorway and if it reoccurs....it was snowing, so i also ponder if the road was just bad and i couldnt get traction....granted no snow, but it was slushy.

I ran like it for over 8months, just dont go racing people off the line and you should be fine ;)

No wheel spin starts, dont accelerate hard under 2k rpm and it should be fine. drop down a gear on the bypass motorway to overtake

lol ok thanks guys, so if it is the DMF issue...then ill kindly ignore it as i dont drive hard anyway, and ill save some pennys to get it fixed in the summer. If its something else than that too is a bonus because its probably cheaper.

problem just vanished, both on the way home and to work this morning.....weird?! still DMF?

VCDS-Lite reported no other errors than EGR valve too....so guess its going to remain a mystery.
