New 40" tv required. Suggestions please....

I know this has been asked before but hopefully not for a while so........

We need a new 40" tv, "reasonable" mid range sort of thing, neither 3D or any sort of internet connectivity is required so bog standard 1080p HD.

I can get a discount on "Sharp" products but they never seem to feature too highly in the desirability stakes...is that a fair assumption ?

Any advice or suggestions welcome...thanks !

I have a Panasonic 42ST50 it's brilliant but, for me, overkill; 3D, smart etc however I did win a £200 off voucher in a £10 raffle so all's well.

The picture is awesome (plasma) but I have a friend with a cheaper (if mine were full price) LED Sony, smart, 3D and the picture is blooming good on that too and the smart bit is better on his than mine.

I will never spend as long researching or as much purchasing a TV again and all I would suggest is go and view some but not in places like Currys where they don't set them up correctly and imo don't have the knowledge, have a look at friends, specialist shops, richer sounds etc and have a gander at HDTV site - really helpful folk on there.

Sony or Panasonic are the better brands, I've got an LG which has had no problems 3 years later, the sound isn't great as with all flatscreens but mine is hooked up to an external sound system anyway.

I would go to RicherSounds either online or in the shop as they have a team of knowledgeable guys who don't try to sell you the most expensive they have. the prices can't be faulted either, I couldn't find the model I bought cheaper anywhere else even a few months later. Not sure if Richersounds offer it but I also bought a 5 year guarantee for 10% of the purchase price on top.

I used the go into a massive shop with about 100 on display and went for what had best picture, that was a Samsung 46" LED one 2 years ago and still going strong Sky Sports HD is amazing! It is my 3rd Samsung first 2 were both 40" LCD. I highly recommend Samsung but going into somewhere like Curry's and seeing what looks best to you from the better brands then shopping around online is probably the best.

I would love a smart TV there was only €8 difference when I got mine in a new years sale but it had a different base which I didn't like. I am now refusing to buy another TV after such a relatively short period of time as they cost some coin these days, if it lasts 10 years I might retire it then.

If you're watching a lot of TV in a bright room then LED is the way forward. If you're mainly using it for films and evening TV in a dark room then a plasma is more natural.

I'd have a scout on AVForums.co.uk for some pretty sound advice.

Don't be fooled by figures on paper. As mentioned previously, get yourself to a specialist retailer and chech a few out in person, from the same source

Also take a look at richer sounds, can normally get a very good price from them, and if you make into a store (rather than online) you will find people who know what they are talking about.

I got a Samsung 40" es6300, led. Also comes with 3d and wifi enabled, etc. The picture is awsome and as its mounted on the wall, the fact that the main body is only 30mm thick, 50mm where the speakers are, so with a slim line mount it is only 50mm from the wall to front face of picture. As with most led tv's the sound is not great but push it through a decent av amp and it transforms the sound. I got the tv, blueray player and Yamaha amp/surround sound from richer sounds all with 5 yr warranty for less than £1100 last July so expect the same set up now will be less than a grand.
