brake disc and wheel size question

Featured Replies

I'm currently running a set of 16 inch alloys with winter tyres on my Octavia vRS.

If I was to change car to the 3.6 V6 Superb, would these 16 inch wheels fit over the brakes?

Eurocarparts suggests both Front discs are 288mm, but not sure how accurate that is.

im sure the the superb's can take a minimum of 16"

I'm sure they're fine for most if not all models, but I've heard the brakes are bigger on the V6 so just want confirmation one way or another.

yeah they could be bigger actually come to think of it but as far as my knowledge goes its 16"

I'm 100% sure the V6 needs at least 17" wheels. So this is not going to fit.

Moreover, not all of the alloys used on Octavia's have a sufficient load rating for the Superb.

I was told by the Skoda dealer that sold me my V6 that the only wheels that fit are the 18 inch ones- I was going to get 17 inch with bigger winter tyres but alas not possible. Also verified if you try t,he wheel compatibility checks on EBay etc when checking options.

I'm sure the front discs are 345mm and rears are 310mm! When I got mine the dealer told me they would have to be 18" wheels but I haven't tried anything smaller!

I can't tell you what brake disk size I have in my 1.8TSi, but I can tell you that 16" winter wheels fit - just but fit :giggle:

Your dealer is wrong (or Skoda mounts bigger brakes on UK S2's then on the versions for the rest of Europe). Here in NL and also in the countries around us (Germany, Belgium, Austria, Denmark), the 3.6 version's standard (and minimum) wheel size is 17".

Furthermore: The unique English decision to combine the (uncomfortable and easily damaged) 18" wheels with the (luxury) Elegance trim level is ridiculous. Why not let the customer choose his own wheel size? In the rest of Europe the standard wheel size for the Elegance trim level is a much more comfortable (and logical) 17".

This is probable also the cause of the 3.6V6 minimum wheel size confusion: Since the 3.6V6 is only available as Elegance, it is (in the UK) only available on 18". But that does not mean the 17" does not fit!

Your dealer is wrong ..........

Well, there's a surprise! I'd be very happy to bung 17" wheels on mine. The disc sizes I quoted are correct though.

I'm running 17" winter alloys on my 3.6 and there is lots of space behind the rims for the standard brakes. Looking to upgrade discs all round at some point and will go a bit bigger. Photo below for info.

The photo is from your rear wheels! These have smaller brakes than the front wheels. If you would look at the front wheels, you would find out that there isn't so much space between the caliper and the rim.

Correct andrehj - my rears are 312mm and the fronts 347mm in diameter (310 and 345 quoted standard discs). The fronts still have at least 25mm of space (50mm total) though before any interference with the rim on the 17's.

All that said I'm a newbie to the Skoda (although I have tinkered with many cars over the years) so happy to be advised as I'm keen to learn about the Superb :)

Regarding the Callipers are you referring to the offset rather than the diameter? Offset (distance from hub) should be a constant unless spacers are used (which are not recommended). Callipers on mine are standard units (as are the discs).

Sorry about that - I misunderstood the point about the Callipers. There is still around 20 mm from the leading edge of the calliper to the inside edge of the rim on the front....
