Police Yeti

Dare say that I've missed previous sightings/threads here, but saw my first police Yeti today. Seems like Cambs police are trialing them - fairly rural area and apparently they like the idea of an affordable 4x4 (CR170 - least that was what the PC thought it was). Couldn't quite make it out at first - very familiar shape at a distance but then broken up by all the high-vis markings. Curiously, from memory, it was on a 60 plate but I've never seen one in these parts before. Could it be that Skoda/whoever had taken a used example and converted it? Or maybe it's just an example that's been doing the rounds from force to force and just made it to East Cambs?

That's just reminded me ... should have posted this before but my memory is getting worse with age ... I saw a Yeti ambulance in the Alps a couple of weeks back.

There have been reports that the Yeti has been approved by several UK authorities and they have been seen in various blue-light and similar liveries for a while now. Graham spotted a F&R in mid-Wales last year, I think, but there haven't been any posted pics of them 'in the field' AFAIK.

Powys Fire have eight I believe, acquired after extensive testing.

I heard the other day that there was a question over the electrics. How many and how common I didn't hear.

Not seen any cop car Yetis other than some pics that appeared here ages ago.

Hertford Hospital has one and so do London Air Ambulance - again not aware of any 'old bill' Yetis, yet.

If the Yeti was needed as a fast response/high speed vehicle may Yeti_Man can loan his out? ;) Should catch a couple of XR2's

Pfffft! It'll catch more than just XR2's!;) Oh, and I never 'loan it out'. ;)

I did see a police one in Hampshire last year, pulling people over near Portsmouth, think I mentioned it before.

One of my local dog handlers say that they were trying to get Kent police to go for them, but seeing as they are dropping their octavia's for Generic Ford estates that you can't stand a cone in, it probably is a loosing battle. They want to reduce vehicles types to about 5 or something I have been told.

The police in Val d'Isere were using Dacia Dusters when I was there in January (evening resort temperatures -17 ?C). Plod in the UK obviously have it cushy...

As with everything else, police budgets on fleet vehicles is being reigned in and there's now a national scheme which all forces can choose their vehicles from. They have 25 manufacturers to choose from for specialist vehicles, but common or garden beat cars can only come from 4 major manufacturers, Ford, GM, Hyundai or Peugeot. They come ready prepped with livery, light bars and radio straight from the factory instead of the old method of supplying a white car and each force doing the rest in house.

The Met seem to get a lot more choice than anyone else though.
