Because it's cheap and easy to do using household items.

I.E in the pikey way (why pay for the proper insulation when bacofoil will do)

oh right!!!

I know this forum and its members are far from 'pc'... but you do realise calling someone a 'pikey', is no better than calling someone a '******' 'paki' or 'gypo'.

Hardly, the names '******' 'Paki' and 'Gypo' are used as a form of racial abuse.

Pikey is a shortening for 'Turnpiker' and is a euphamism for people who where frequent travellers of the turnpike roads of Britain and as such these turnpike travellers are not a RACE of people, unlike Romany gypsies who would, quite rightly, be offended to be called a gypo.

Personally I would not consider pikey to be a racially abuse term only a social euphamism since it is directed at soap dodgers etc. of all race, colours and creeds. :)

It is actually rather more complicated.Rather like call my bluff, It is a 'Pi' - 'key' modification.Pi being 3.1415 etc etc and used to calculate all manner of emissions/torque boosts, fuel consumption as a result of the 'key' modiification.

I am not 100% though because there was talk of radiators being involved yesterday.

A pikey mod is a mod only done by pikeys

Because you need small hands to be able to do it?

Yep, small hands = light fingers.

I get it now ;)

Ah well...

Gypsies, Romanies & travellers have all been labelled as dirty filthy Pikeys, & they don't like being labelled as a minority group anymore. Using the word Pikey is no different today from the word Paki to describe someone of Asian origin. Whether they come from India, Sri Lanka, Afghaistan, etc.

erm but when refering to a cheap mod its hardly racial abuse

Exactly. The mod itself isn't a person, and hence cannot be offended by what you call it. I would have thought that was plainly obvious, but some people seem determined to push the 'PC' cause as far as is possible.

We had a similar situation on the Minimotoclub forums too. A year or two ago, the chinese started producing cheap and nasty copies of European minimotos. Naturally, these were refered to as 'chinky bikes'. Then we were are branded racists. I tried pointing out that the bike have never actually complained about being refered to as a 'chinky bike', but the complaints kept coming...

EDIT :

I know this forum and its members are far from 'pc'... but you do realise calling someone a 'pikey'' date=' is no better than calling someone a '******' 'paki' or 'gypo'.

As you said, calling SOMEONE a pikey. When the air vent starts complaining, maybe we'll call it something else.

suppose that could be taken as an insult to the people who made them :s

+ id never call a pikey a pikey as id like to wake up the next day rather than getting mauled by their dags and beaten with baseball bats while been towed behined a l200 pickup or a rusty blue tranny van while been made to read a caravan sales catalogue looking for periwincle blue fittings !!!

hey, it doesnt offend me. ;)

The title of the topic is "Why is it called a pikey mod". I just stuck my two penneth in. :P

Im far from 'pc'... but manners, respect and common courtesy cost f'all where I come from.

Im just waiting for the '******' mod thread. ;)

Remmeber... calling a black piece of plastic a '******' wont offend it, as it aint a person, thus dont have feelings... keep 'em coming!

Yer and that was my idea so don't go getting an preconceptions about patenting it for yourself Loz ;)

actually if you said that then yes it would be offencive as your saying it because of its colour. pikey just means cheap ****** doesnt get used to describe things other than in a derogatary way. also its to do with associations i dont associate pikey with gypsies straight away but as soon as i hear ****** i think kkk and gangster rap. pikey has only really been used to describe the filthy unwashed tax dodgers since snatch imho.

How do you know that the person starting the thread isn't a pikey themselves ?

Or that the person who devised the mod in the first place isn't /wasn't a pikey?

How do you know that the person starting the thread isn't a pikey themselves ?

Exactly! Thats my point.

I would say their one and the same. Why is 'pikey' used to describe something cheap? (seriously, I never heard that one before) if '******' shouldn't be used to describe something black?

also its to do with associations i dont associate pikey with gypsies straight away but as soon as i hear ****** i think kkk and gangster rap

Your right mate. As soon as I hear either of those words I think racist.

You see, its all subjective.

I have no problem with the use of any of the words mentioned in this thread. But that's prolly cos I am white and dont live in a caravan. But at the same time, I wouldn't dream of calling anyone a 'pikey' 'paki' or '******' and can see how words like that could really upset someone. Again, common courtesy.

But evidently, I am the only one that thinks like this.

So, as you were.

Exactly !! PIKEY was used to refer to soap dodging ruffians LONG before the advent of the seven berth twin axled caravan !! Blame films like snatch for the publics association of the term pikey with gypsies.

Exactly! Thats my point.

Well it they are indeed a Pikey then the racist rule can't be played can it

Sorry, I thought you were reffering to the chap that started this thread.

Hey I dont want to argue... I speak my mind, thats all.
