Engine management flashes 3 times under full load?

Featured Replies

Hi All, Last nite i was driving home M8 and I speed up to see how the car will handle it, only for a short period of time i went to 110 (km/h) and engine management light flashed about 3 times and car gave me like a warning with loss of power, noticable but wasnt strong, of course i slowed right down, no issues, or anything afterwards. Keep my mind occupied and wondering what was that? something i should worry about? Please do not think i am driving like a dafty...

It sounds like a misfire, probably down to spark plugs or a weak coil pack.

Yeah coil pack, do a run from in 4th gear from low (1500rpm/2000rpm) to say 5000rpm but use Full throttle don't gradually put your foot down. This makes the engine work hard and will show up a coil pack with pronounced cut outs/stall type feelings as the car pulls hard through the rev range.

Try to do it somewhere quiet/late at night with no other road users around as you may break the 100kph limit you exceeded in your first post.

If you use a gradual throttle it is possible to drive round the coil pack fault and you won't get the stutter/stall type feeling through the rev range. 3rd gear again can usually mask the symptons because the engine isn't being asked to work as hard. 5th gear will do it too but you may then start to get into silly speeds ie 150 ahemm kph

thanks for all replies, I'll try get a new coil pack, at the moment is all fine, but like you guys mention, this might develop further and misfires might occur more often.

Wondering if this would shows up in VCDS?

If the engine light has flashed then yes there should be a fault code stored.

cheers for that, I'll get this connected and I'll post the results

If 1 coil goes the others will follow - replace all 4 as they are only £30 each and they take 1/2hr to fit.

Agreed do all 4 and worth doing plugs while your in there.
