Turbo problem at 38,000 miles?

Featured Replies

This morning I noticed that the car did not accelerate as normal - on motorway it was sluggish- the car has done circa 38000 miles - I have been told by a skoda garage that it will be a 4 figure cost if a new turbo is required - the car is just over 3 years old ( warranty expired) and bought from new- has anyone alse experienced the same problem?

Yarp. Tis a common failure. Mine went about the same time as yours. Yes it was around £1800 to fix - I did have an independent warranty which covered it. Thank God!

I think you can save money by going to a trusted independent though.

Could it be the turbo being gunked up with carbon deposits and needing a clean, rather than replace?

What engine is it? 1.9 or 2.0?

Its 1.9.

I thought the turbo issue was more associated with the 2.0TDI engine.

Mine is coming up for 7 years old, 53K covered and no independent warranty. I like to live life on the edge :)

I recently had occasional limp mode after 5 years and 75K miles and full Skoda service history.

An independant in Leeds diagnosed it as needing a cleanout, removed turbo, sent it for professional refubrishing, refitted it and loaned me a furby for the week.

Also advised me to go to fixed servicing from now on too...

£ 500 all in. A lot cheaper than a new turbo.

There is plenty of chatter about a mr muscle cleanup but that may only be a temporary fix

Its 1.9.

Turbo failure on a 1.9 isn't common.

I would be looking along the lines of:

Sticky turbo vanes

Boost pipe leak

Turbo actuator

Gunked up/blocked EGR

MAF Sensor

First think I would try is to disconnect the MAF sensor. This is on the air intake pipe just after the air filter.

If it runs better with it unplugged there is your answer.

I would check the pipework and the MAF sensor first. Also check your air filter.

Seems rare for a 1.9 to have turbo trouble.

Bought from new?

Full service history?

Low mileage?

Just outside of the Skoda warranty?

I'd be giving Skoda UK a call and asking for a good chunk of 'goodwill' towards any costs...

Worth a go but at best expect 30% off full steeler price which is 200% of independant price.
