New Golf GTD - Same engine as the vRS TDi?

Featured Replies

Yep, that engine is announced to be the new VRS TDi engine.

I thought VAG were making a 215bhp 4cyl diesel? Not that i expected it to go in the VRS plus 180bhp is plenty and especially 280lb/ft through only the front tyres. I was sure i read something about a 215bhp version though to compete with BMW's twin turbo 4cyl diesel.

They do have a 2.0 biturbo, but that will take a while before this goes into production (other than the detuned one in the Amarok and T5)

Edited, is a T5 not a T6, typo....

Interesting. Wonder what cars it will slot into as you would have though the GTD would be perfect for it. Then again that would make the GTD more potent than the GTI and that surely wouldnt be allowed.

Just noticed the new GTD has a combined MPG of 67. Holy smoke thats good. My VRS has a combined of 47. How on earth can they have achieved such an improvement? The octy is bigger and heavier but even the old GTD was 14mpg poorer than this new version. Impressive stuff.

I know test MPG's mean nothing but surely they still work for comparisons like this? I would love to know how much more real world MPG there is over the old version as i suspect this increased figure is more to do with VW getting better at cheating the MPG test cycle rather than real world improvements.

Hopefully its just me being cynical as i would love these increased MPG's in my next car.

My sentiments exactly. Surely this is what we can expect for the new oil burner, does not mean the petrol will be sub 7 seconds? I think this car (Petrol or Diesel) could be immense (on paper) - i'll reserve the judgement on the physical side until i've seen it in it's flesh.

My boss has the twin turbo diesel in his transporter, it is very smooth with no lag.
