1.9Tdi 110 (54plate) which oil

Featured Replies

Hi all,

In the event that I need to top up the monster 110 Tdi engine (dont laugh) :sun: what oil should I use.

I have a bottle of Castrol Edge, Fully Synthetic 5W-30, is that ok??

Also would you lot say Castrol is what you would put in every 10K.

Reason I ask is because when you add mobile 1 to a BMW 2.0 Diesel engine, it doesn't like it and will run rougher than a teenagers face, However put Castrol in (as they recommend for a reason) it runs as smooth as the cheek of your nearest and dearest :D :sun: :sun: :sun: :sun: :sun: :sun: . Do the VAG engines tend to have a fit also when the non branded oil is poured in????

Many thanks

PW

Depends - are you running on fixed or variable servicing?

Sounds like a dumb question??? but what is the difference??

Is it the Castrol specifically for the VAG TDI engines? it'll say so if it is. What VAG numbers are quoted on the can 502.xx 505.xx 507.xx etc

If you're on a variable (up to 20k 2 years) rather than fixed (12 months 10k which ever comes 1st) service plan you may need a different oil- the code for your engine will determine if it can (but may not) be on a variable service plan or not. What's been done previously in your service book should help?

depending on the answers to the above will determine which oil you need

Have a look at this website- it might help too

The previous did fixed. Which to me sounds a better way to keep the car in top condition.

On the bottle it has - Fulfills the requirements of the former VW503 01 Specification.

Also it has numerous manufacturers logos with ticks next to them stating that the oil is approved by both them and Castrol.

Just put the reg in and I have 2 options.

Black top = 5W-40 Recommended (PD Pump Deuse)

Red top = 5W-30 Ultimate protection

The red top is what I have. Bare in mind I really do tend to care for my engines. I do still believe that Diesels are sensitive to the elements.

Also there is a W/O option? what is that??

I'd agree that fixed is the way to go. SWMBO has a 57 plate Seat with a 1.9pd engine in it and that's always been on a fixed service program 10k 12 months and the local Skoda garage sold me quantum premium 5w-40 which meets 502.01 505.01 for it, which I think is the equivelent of this which I've also used

I don't know what the 503.01 spec relates to - sorry.

BTW I've seen elsewhere that the 5w-30 top dog oil used in my CR is something to do with a lower ash requirement for the DPF, but as a 54 plate yours won't have a DPF?

Noo Thankfully it doesn't have a DPF.

I think I will stick with the 5W-30 then.

What are peoples opinion of Fuchs??

I know its engineered in Germany and so I would expect it to meet VAGroup, BMW and Mercedes Benz specs right??

Or is it tosh oil that is cheap and full of impurities?

Me and a friend (liquid engineer & Scientist with oil and lubricant products) tested Castrol & Shell HELIX oils and found that the impurities in the Shell were so intense that would decrease engine life dramatically in comparison to the Castrol that showed next to nil impurities.

I may sound OCD but that is just me ha :sun:

The 110 isn't a PD engine.

I think I use 5w30, Fuchs Long Life (as I run variable). Opie Oils have 15% up to Sunday and there is an additional discount for being a Brisky member too.

Hmmmmmm I hate halfords much much more then.

Ahh yea how do I benefit with that then? Brisky code?

Fuchs any good?

Last year when I did 14k and had an oil change every 6 months in my octy. This year Its probably going to go almost the entire year without a change but will only cover 6-7k.

From all the reading I've done I decided I would go with fixed intervals of 6-8 months (usually just before winter and just after) as apparently oil has a shelf life and even long life oils break down and become crap quite quickly. For the sake of 50 quid or an hour under the car I feel its worth it and I can definitely feel the car is better after a change and sounds less rough.

Just make sure you get a nice fresh set of filters with the new oil as well :) Even though you can supposedly run a diesel fuel filter forever I think they are a fiver or tenner and take literally 5 minutes to fit once you know how. Same with Pollen and air.

I run genuine VW Longlife 3 oil in my Octy. I am doing around 27,000 miles per year at the moment and switched over to variable servicing and left it to see how far the car would go before it called for a service. I got 27,000 miles before the indicator came up on the dash, but it didn't seem right leaving it that long. I have just changed the oil again at 20,000 miles, but I think for my own piece of mind I will probably drop it back to 10,000 from now on.

For reference I run Fuchs Titan Pro S oil in my 968 and this has made it much quieter and smoother on tickover than the Mobil 1 I ran it on before. It is very good oil, but not cheap though.

Neither is Castrol but I would imagine you do get 5 liters instead of 4 (which makes no sense at all)

The genuine Longlife 3 isn't badly priced from TPS, currently on offer at £27.49 +vat for 5 litres.

Also try a dealer and ask for a briskoda discount, mine does one and long life oil was under 30 quid

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

The VW longlife 3 is on offer at TPS from tomorrow and is £16.99+VAT. only on offer till wednesday!

But if you are on fixed servicing, with that engine, it should be 5/40's! which is £14.99+VAT as of tomorrow!

Isn;t TPS trade only though? :(

Officially yes, but if you ring Manchester TPS and ask for Chris (my son (Radioone)) he will sort you out
