Skoda Fabia First Time Buyer!

Featured Replies

Just got a new job and im going to need a car! Im after a Fabia VRS i like everything about them so i just thought i would sign up and if anyone can answer these questions or give me any advice about buying a used VRS it would be really helpful! I've got between 3000-4000 to spend which isnt alot but if i can get one thats been looked after i wont be bothered about the high milage, the research ive done makes me think i'll be able to get a 04 or even 05 reg

- Is there any specific faults i should look out for?

- if something did go wrong how much are they usually to repair? Lets say gearbox for example

- is there any advantage over getting an 05 model over a 03 or 04 model? Or are they the same?

- Any advice?

Thanks alot

they do have their niggly bits as you will see from the forum, but i purchased mine a year ago and i'm like a cheshire cat every time i drive it, for me i needed a cost effective car and its ticking all the boxes, fuel economy can't fault, at least 490-510 per tank full, very easy to service oil and basic bits, mine is a stock 06 plate, bought with 114k on the clock, didn't know when or if belts changed got them done straight away £300 plus, happy til 190k, did have a problem with wet carpet behind drivers seat changed gromet in the floor and sealed door as slight leak, re-newed door cards x 2, mileage now on 130k and pulls like mad. i'm happy with my car. its more the clutches go in these before the box, have a look anyway.

Thanks mate thats really helpful, i do realise that the cambet would have to be changed (If not already done) and maybe a few other bits and bobs to make sure its well looked after. How much did you pay for yours if thats not too rude a question? Im thinking about £3700 on the car itself and then £300 to put a few niggles right (If there is any)

To put it in perspective, I got mine from a dealer a fortnight ago. 04 plate, 106k, 13 service stamps, 2 cambelt changes, £3795 and its pretty mint. There are nice ones out there if your prepared to travel/look.

Yeah thats about the price im looking at! Traveling to buy a used car doesnt bother me i've already travelled +150 miles for each car i've owned purely because cars up my end are so overvalued its unreal so i would say anything within about 200 miles i'll be prepared to travel for

I find the worse thing about driving a Skoda is that everyone and there dog likes to inform you that "Its VW with a different badge" it gets very annoying very fast

You are aware a Skoda Fabia is the same car underneath as a Seat Ibiza?

I knew there both based on the same VW platform but im not sure how similar they really are? dont know too much about cars i just had constant trouble with coil packs on my seat ibiza with no solution ever found, ended up spending +400 on coil packs alone over the time i had it so im keen to avoid something like that with my next car. I've maybe just wrongly assumed because my ibiza was petrol and the VRS is diesel then they'd be completly different engines, feel free to correct me if thats not right

Yes, they're completely different engines, but only because one is petrol and the other is diesel. You can get the same diesel engine in an Ibiza. They both share exactly the same range of engines, gearboxes and pretty much everything else mechanical, as does my Polo.

Thanks for clearing that up mate
