Done. Disappointed no improvement in economy yet, might have something to do with the increased UCS.

  • Mine are coming off this month although it was -3 the other night so its not asif their still not coming in useful. Cant wait to rid the taxi look though!

  • I'm also of the opinion that winter tyres are only really beneficial in snow. The contis grip just as well in 2 deg C as the Uniroyals did, in fact better.

Really glad i never bothered buying winters this year. My summers are doing a grand job so far but in fairness winter was mild and uneventful. Couple of days of 1 inch of snow hardly justifies winter tyres. Pity as i love the snow and would have loved it to be so bad that i really needed winter tyres. Still below 7 degress a lot of the time but thats hardly a problem if we are all honest. For me winters are for snow i wouldnt even consider buying winters if the weather we had this and last year was going to become the norm. Had to perform an emergency stop last week and the car stopped fine on its summers despite 5 degress and damp roads.

Rumours are we are due some more snow but im sceptical about that one. All my spring bulbs are out and most plants / trees / shrubs in the garden are budding so i think im safe now to be honest.

Edit - Shortly after posting this it started hailing and a few folk are saying snow is coming tonight LOL.

Snow missed the top of the country, most of the bottom, and fell over us in the middle this winter!

Wouldn't have moved without winter preparation this year.

Looking at some forecasts, we're going to see Snow again this Sunday & Monday in parts of the north east.

there were always be sceptic and always be those that swear by winter boots. Wouldn't be without mine but each to their own.

Never took mine off last year :) Yes when pressing on the grip wasn't the best but to my surprise they never worn too quick.

Can only go on what the car drives like! Could of course simply be that the Uniroyal winter tyre I'm using is just poor.

I agree. I have them on our Honda and they have been very useful this year. I have tried to advocate them to people in the past, but I've found they are a bit like religion. I'm a convert, but there are still a lot of non believers out there. One day they may see the light, 'till then I'm seen by most people I know as an oddball with wacky beliefs.

I have to smile at those that pay good money to drive the likes of a Yeti 4x4 but drive about almost treadless at any time of the year.

We've just returned from a weekend driving around the Yorkshire Dales,in rain, sleet and snow.

SWMBO now takes the mickey, saying " It's a good job you fitted your winter tyres "at frequent intervals.

I wont be taking them off for the foreseeable future.

Only light snow in Forfar so far this morning.

But,

I would appreciate any word from members around Laurencekirk - Aberdeen on Monday morning if there are any problems starting to show.

Want to get to a funeral in Aberdeen but taking elderly folk and not taking any risks of major delays or hold ups.

Need to be heading back south late afternoon, so not coming north if there is already snow or ice problems at breakfast time.

I see the snow is at Laurencekirk now. (Grampian A90) Just watching to see if it stats drifting badly.

nice vid.... the cool part that reflect MOST UK winter conditions, is stopping on a wet road at 5 celcius.... (thats plus 5 NOT minus 5, if it was colder it would be a hell of alot more difference!) when the car with winters had stopped, the car with summers was still doing 20 mph....

Good find but the nae sayers will still find an excuse not to believe.

Have you read Evo's winter test (Feb issue #17) ?

I'm not a non believer, just adding to the pool of data to make an informed decision. From my experience, a great summer tyre is probably as good / possibly better in cold dry / damp conditions than a poor winter tyre. Snow and torrential rain are of course a different consideration.

I have never EVER seen a tyre test showing a summer tyre better than a winter in temps below 7 cecius... I have loads more, I can show you other magazine tests ect ect... ALL with the same car in the same consitions... all with the winter tyres mullering it. the autoexpress one with the two yetis (one 2WD and one 4WD) the 2WD with winters and the 4WD with summers.... and you know which one by a country mile? the 2WD drive car with winters... especially impressive the cornering grip, where you may think the 4WD would be better, the 2WD yeti was 25% better..... the stopping distances made a joke of the summer tyres....

please show me ANYTHING that shows a summer tyre doing better below 7 celcius

the worst thing is the stopping distance..... thats whats important if something happens on the road in the real world....

Snowy, snowy very very snowy, and icy, -3* degrees and to stay cold and maybe more snow to come for a while.

It is a Winter/cold weather tyre day here without doubt.

Obviously many will not have, they need avoided.

My Yeti (4x4) with winters on is having a bit of work done on it.

So not an option and used the LEAF, FWD on summers. Still managed to avoid crashing on the way in though. :)

I dont think anyone actually thought that 4wd would give you more cornering grip.

Snow in Aberdeen but hardly any. About a couple of inches yesterday but got around ok on the summers. A bit skitey but i survived. I dont doubt winters would have been better but then there is almost no snow today albeit a bit of ice so again 2 days of isolated winter weather just reaffirms my descision to not spend circa £600 on winter rubber. If the weather we just had was more prolonged then maybe winters would make more sense but ill wager its mild again come wednesday and probably back up to 11 degrees as it was a few days ago.

Minus 5 this morning and around 15 cm of snow outside. More where it's drifted. Folk are struggling around at walking pace in their cars. They should allocate different lanes for cars with summer tyres so the rest of us can get on with the day.

Time to swap winter tyres out? Nope!

Put my summer's back on last weekend as it was around +10degs the entire week. Today it's dropped to -2degs and wow can you feel the difference.

very twitchy, steering is very light and the entire car is not settled at all. Fuel economy has disappeared too!

I'm not about to photocopy the pages, but the conclusion was that the winter tyres only made a noticeable difference in snow. Oh, and the Nokian winters were the worst. Make what you will of it, it is Evo after all. I'm not at home right now, but if I remember I'll look up the accel / decel and cornering g tests they did.

Just to be clear (again), I'm a winter tyre convert, I've argued for them elsewhere on other threads, but like all arguments, it's only fair to present both sides, and make sure all the info is available to make in informed choice. FWIW, more often than not I think Evo is at best misguided.

However, I don't recommend Uniroyal winter tyres, as they do not add any more grip on cold dry roads, at least not on my car at the speeds I drive at that I can notice. They are noticeably softer, less precise and feel more vague than the OE contis, even down to 1-2 DegC as it was today. I haven't tried them in any emergency or high speed manoeuvre so I'm probably missing the real point to them.

I am always sceptical of ‘professional’ reviews as there will always be some bias towards their advertisers IMO.

I currently use Bridgestone Blizzaks on the Superb (as they came fitted on the new Audi wheels) I did think ‘well being a premium brand winter tyre they must be good’ :giggle:.

Whereas in reality yes they are pretty good in the snow, but they do loose traction far too easily under mild acceleration on a damp road, compare that to my previous Nokian WR G2’s that were IMO truly amazing.

Last year I fitted the newer Nokian WR A3’s to SWMBO’s TT and took it out to make sure all was OK,

so 3 miles on a brand new set of tyres… so they were hardly at their best as they had not been scrubbed in at all,

now I will admit being a Quattro the traction ought to be good, when pushed the worn summer Bridgestone’s (?) could be made to loose traction, so on a damp, cold (1°) night I was expecting some scrabbling for grip/understeer to say the least from the Nokian’s, but pushed hard from a standing start and from a low speed exiting a roundabout (over a 90° bend) both on WOT there was NOTHING at all apart from grip

At the present moment in time my money is on Nokian winter tyres EVERY time, I am so impressed with their winter tyres that I am also considering their summer tyres (for both cars),

Winter tyres off now and Snow tyres fitted.

Let the fun begin.

-2*C and no gritters on the go around here.

george

Tues 5.20 am, this will be an interesting and fun day.

No snow here, and enough gritters to turn the road brown and my car grey-white.
