Looking to buy a fabia VRS

Featured Replies

I try to read every word written on VAG cars and future vehicles.

I have seen the mention on forums about 1.6 turbos, but that is hard to imagine as being anything to do with any replacement engines for a Mk3 Fabia vRS.

That would be a different class of car and price range, insurance class etc.

Likely to be moving on to pretty low Euro 6 emission engines by that time anyway.

The newest lighter than the old one Audi A3 1.8 tfsi S-tronic 180 has been given about the same engine performance as the current 1.4 vRS.

The Audi's kerb weight is lower than the Fabia.

Manufactures are going much smaller in CC's and going twin turbo or twincharger,

or as the Polo GT Blue, deactivating cylinder.

The 1.4 tsi S-A should be a truly great engine combined with a DSG and actually is.

They, 'VAG' have obviously Manufacturing or suppliers parts manufacturing faults with some engines.

Hardly seems like the experiment should not end in totally reliable and even better engines.

Lets just hope they last for at least 100,000 miles when it is an OK engine.

? Who knows what the highest mileage is for a vRS that has not required mechanical engine repairs?

Only one i know for certain is Sharkriders 46,000 one.

Yea I have asked several times if anyone has run a twin charger in any vehicle to six figure milieages but not seen so far :/

Online there is always such a mix up with the various engines and engine types & VAG codes and Names, 'tsi' tfsi etc never help.

Would be good if VAG/ Skoda, VW, Audi, Seat kept the media and public up to date with true reports on their vehicles and warranty work or failures.

Then we can believe when there are good engines and cars.

'Engine of the year 2009 for twinchargers', then in 2012.

looks a bit daft in 2013 if you read posts on high oil usage.

I'm out of the running - and thought I stood a chance after passing the first service!

I have just put a deposit on a January 2012 VRs and now reading this it scares me a little. The first owner kept the car only 9 months and 4500 miles. Will the dealer be able to tell me what work has been done under warranty?

Welcome to the forum & vRS ownership.

Yes the dealer can tell you, or a call to Skoda UK Customer Services should give you any info on it.

Are you sure it was a Private Owner?

Hopefully it is a good one, most are.

This stuff sounds scary, really its just to forewarn.

There are far worse cars from other manufacturers out there.

You come onto a forum, you will find the problems listed. They are generally though a minority of cars that have issues - as has been said, most people join a forum initially because they have a problem in the first place...

A 2012 one still has almost 2 years of its warranty left at least - see if you can wangle another year of two out of them for peace of mind..

My current Fabia (a SE TDi 61/11) is ex Europcars but the VRs is coming from the same dealership/salesman as it was sold from originally. The first owner was a schoolteacher and lived about 20 miles from the dealership.

Ho hum if the VRs does have any problems I will move it on; I rarely keep cars long and this was a good deal as it was over-age for them (Jan 2012, 4.5k miles, £11k). I don't stand a chance at getting any more from them tbh as I haggled very hard.

Two questions:

-Can I buy a Skoda extended warranty for the car at 14 months old/as second owner?

-What cable will I need to connect my Samsung phone (Galaxy Note 2) to the MDI interface?

Someone that knows will be along hopefully.

I read someplace about an Extended Skoda Used Warranty now as you buy the car.

But it was last year i was reading it and i think that Brochure was an offer till 31/12/2012

I'm still wondering how widespread engine failures are as a percentage over vrs's sold. Is the issue really that widespread? Remember most users don't go on problems so we don't get a balanced argument

Since my car was using excessive oil prior to an engine replacement, I started to keep a record of the number of other Briskoda members (UK only) reporting similar problems on the forum with their vRS's over the last 6 months or so. These are the figures to date: -

Number of members reporting high oil consumption = 54

Number of the above who received the oil breather modification = 23

Number who reported that the oil breather modification did not work = 15

Number who went on to have an engine replacement = 22

Impossible to know how this works out in percentage terms and, as is often stated, people are more likely to make a post on an oil consumption thread if their car has a problem.

The good news: -

Skoda have not held back in providing oil breather mods or replacement engines

Only one recent report to my knowledge of a replacement engine using excessive oil

Only one report of the latest CTHE engine using excessive oil

The 'bad' cars should be caught under warranty and rectified. As this process goes on the stock of 'good' used cars coming onto the market in the future should increase.

There is anecdotal evidence that gentle running-in is more likely to result in later oil consumption issues.

Despite all of this I still think it is a fantastic car.

Details ;)?

So a normal driving/hardish run-in seems to work the best on this engine?

what are the details of the CTHE engine with a problem?

I believe that MilgeS has the CTHE engine. He is reporting 3 litres of oil used in 2465 miles.

Having had one and knowing what I know now about the 1.4 TSi I can honestly say i wouldnt buy another. I could forgive it the slightly flawed driving experience but the evidence that these engines are demonstrating major problems, heavy oil use, misfiring, coil pack, spark plug and piston ring failures and that too many cars seem to be getting engines replaced under warranty I woudnt risk it again.

I really don't think there is a pattern to oil usage, my car uses it and travels 3 miles to work and back 4 days a week, not driven hard and it uses oil, my mate bought one 6 months later, he travels 10k a year, town and motorway driving and his has used next to nothing, it is the luck of the draw.

Buy the car, if you get a bad one SUK will perform the checks and if necessary replace the engine, in the meantime they will give you oil (ask nicely and keep cool) they will give you a courtesy car when yours is in (or if it goes in) and you have three years warranty that can be extended to five years, what is the problem?

The car is a great buy for the money and will put a smile on your face.

Yes. Frequent gear changing, plenty of full throttle to load the engine (once warm) and not holding back too much with the use of high revs. This will mean a certain amount of manual gear changing.

If this theory is correct, cars that have been demonstrators should be well run-in and less likely to use oil.

^^ after my track day our car has used no oil, I don't think the revs dropped below 5500 all day!

Sorry but that sort of thing would be complete cause for me to abandon a car; would be no smile on my face if it was repeatedly at the dealers for little tweaks and then a new engine at just a number of months old.
