Which Oil? vRS Petrol '06

Featured Replies

Hi All,

As I'm new to the ownership of my vRS, the oil light check light has now popped up and I'm undecided which Oil would be best to get.

I've read that getting fully synthetic is essential, however is it worth spending extra on brands such as Castrol and Mobil etc or maybe go with the Halfords/Shell own brands which are cheaper?

Any advice would be great.

There are innumerable threads on this but mainly which oil depends on which servicing standard you are on.

Variable needs more expensive oil than fixed.

They all need oils that meet the strict VAG oil codes.

Thanks for this - i'll take a look

Aspman - When you say 'fixed' and 'variable' - what time period between services are you refering to?

Thanks again

Hello Wardy, congratulations on your new car.

Forgive me leaping in but 'Variable' servicing intervals are set by the car - ie, it'll tell you when it needs a service.

Mine, also an '06 RS, is on variable servicing and seems to go about 12 months/12k miles before popping the warning up on the dash.

The other option, depending on the amount of miles you do is the more traditional 'Fixed' service interval - ie, when the car reaches 'X' mileage or 'Y' months have passed, bring the car back to be seen.

Because the variable servicing intervals tend to be further apart, the engine requires a different spec of oil - VW code - 504.00 / 507.00 IIRC.

By the way, you're best to keep an eye on the oil levels as the engine can use a bit, & ideally you don't want to get to the point where the oil warning light's coming on..

All the best,

Dave.

Fixed is annual i think its 10k, variable is 18k

If you get a 507 spec oil your covered either way.

Thanks mate and appreciate the comments, really helpful! Funnily enough I was due to check all the levels on Sunday as I've been really busy with other things, but this flashed up this morning so thought I'd get some advice. I'll need to re-check the history as to when it was actually last serviced, as I've only owned the car about 3/4 weeks now.

Fantastic, thanks Grizzle

You can get 4 litres of Castrol Edge 5W 30 (VW507 spec) from eBay delivered for £30, just a heads up.

Yes buy a 4 or 5 litre tub, you're going to need it

You're very welcome - I hope you're enjoying it - from personal experience it's one of the more fun & understated cars I've owned & I love it to bits.

Re the oil-checking, I'd get into a routine as these engines can be known to use it like I say - better safe than sorry.. :whew:

It's 15k Km which is 9.5K miles ish. Confused me the first time it popped up 'early'.

I feed mine the better oil even though it's on fixed. And yes keep a weekly eye on the oil. Some TFSI engines like a lot of oil.

I had same car same year same problem. I used a fully synthetic 5w40 from opie oils, whatever was on offer at the time. That plus driving it fairly hard reduced the oil consumption by around half over 40k miles

Quick update on this.

Checked the oil levels after the oil check lmessage was on/off and it's almost completely out! Well under the minimum.

Surely the warning light should have come on when it's this low?
